Nobody should be surprised that Celtic are in this situation.

Celtic’s non-World Cup players return for pre-season training on Friday, as preparations begin for the 2026/27 Premiership season.

As mentioned by the Daily Record, usually, it’s Gavin Strachan leading training, but he has opted to leave and join West Brom’s coaching staff.

Strachan is usually supported by Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham, but Celtic have yet to agree new deals for the duo.

So, it means that, as things stand, it’s Martin O’Neill who will be taking training, and it’s another embarrassing chapter for those running Celtic.

What have you made of Gavin Strachan leaving Celtic’s coaching staff?

Celtic are creating ‘unnecessary chaos’

Even with a figurehead like O’Neill in the Celtic Park dugout, those running the ship have still managed to outdo themselves.

The process of overhauling this declining squad should already be underway, but instead, there isn’t even a proper team in place to take pre-season.

Speaking on the Daily Record, Ryan McDonald explained the situation and how, as things stand, it’s O’Neill standing on his lonesome.

“Celtic are actually down three crucial members of the backroom staff,” said McDonald. “Martin O’Neill doesn’t take training.

“But as things stand, he could well be taking training on Friday. He is meant to be the figurehead who oversees it.

“Gavin Strachan was the one who led training for most of last season, supported by Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham.

“As things stand, Gavin Strachan has left for West Brom. There is no agreement with Maloney and Fotheringham. It’s unnecessary chaos from Celtic.”

Even Martin O’Neill is being disrespected…

You would think that there would be some class and decorum towards a man of O’Neill’s stature, and what he has done for this football club.

Forget about the Irishman’s first legendary spell in Glasgow, just go back to last season.

If it wasn’t for O’Neill, Celtic would have ended the campaign trophyless, because during both of his spells, everything and anything was falling apart.

Yet Celtic still won the domestic double and brought everyone together, including the return of the Green Brigade.

But now the Celtic board are, once again, showing their true colours by how they are running proceedings at the champions of Scotland.
