Brendan Rodgers has called for Celtic to push on with their transfer business in the closing weeks of the summer window, admitting there’s still work to do on his squad.

So far Celtic have completed deals for goalkeeping duo Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo. That fills the void left by Joe Hart and Benjamin Siegrist but as of yet no outfield signings have been made.

The club are said to be close to bringing Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah back to the club but even their arrivals will not strengthen Rodgers’ squad over and above what he had available last season.

The next few weeks are very important and will play a major part in determining what kind of campaign the Bhoys have.

Many fans are craving an injection of quality and, in fairness, Rodgers is too. Signings need to be made.

Brendan Rodgers on the transfer state of play at Celtic

The manager said [Sky Sports]: “We still have work to do. In transfers there are a lot of moving parts, it’s never as easy as seeing a player and just bringing them in but we’d hope by the end of August that we would have the team supported who we want it.

“You cannot snooze in this game of football, you always have to be developing and improving. We want to ensure we have an improved squad for this season to take on all the challenges that we have.

“Everyone would love to get their work done as soon as they can. We would love to have had everything done for the first game of the season but that doesn’t always end up being the case. My hope is we can be much stronger coming out of the August window than what we finished last season.”

Positions that still need love at Celtic

The Scottish champions could do with an upgrade at centre-back to find a quality partner for Cameron Carter-Vickers. Carl Starfelt has still not been replaced despite Liam Scales pushing on to become a solid squad option.

Greg Taylor needs real competition at left-back, while another winger could help up the attacking output of the squad.

That’s in addition to finally completing deals for Idah and Bernardo. With so much noise around Matt O’Riley, too, the club must be well prepared to move on a very good midfield option should he end up exiting Glasgow.
