Celtic fans were waiting for two new signings on deadline day.

As it happened, the Scottish Premiership leaders only managed one.

Jeffrey Schlupp arrived on a six-month loan from Crystal Palace which was what manager Brendan Rodgers did hint earlier in the week would be the process on Monday afternoon.

The Ghana international is a versatile defender who is likely to act as a Greg Taylor challenger at left-back while he can also play in the midfield.

It was a striker that fans were hopeful of landing after Kyogo departed and Rodgers admitted that was his priority Hoops position this window.

It did not quite go down that way but at least supporters can be satisfied that Schlupp is in the door after a bit of a saga involving Kieran Tierney was laid bare.

Jeffrey Schlupp joined Celtic on deadline day

Arsenal refused to sanction Tierney to Celtic in January as they wanted to keep hold of an experienced player with his “leadership qualities”.

That was even despite Oleksandr Zinchenko going nowhere amid £30million interest from Serie A.

Fans were quick to have their say on Schlupp’s arrival after it became officially official when Celtic‘s social media team shared confirmation of his move.

And even though there were some critics on a lack of striker addition, the 32-year-old utility man was welcomed by the punters.

What fans said about Celtic signing Jeffrey Schlupp

One said: “There we go, welcome to Celtic Jeff,” with a four-leaf clover emoji.

Another added: “Welcome aboard Jeffrey,” as one wrote on X: “Welcome to the most successful club in Scotland, Jeffrey.”

A fourth commented: “Welcome to Celtic, big man”.

Schlupp’s arrival was hailed by Rodgers in his comments after signing the former Leicester City man.

He took to the club’s website to credit the club for getting it over the line.

The Irishman also explained why he was so hopeful of landing the player.

Brendan Rodgers explains Schlupp’s qualities

He said: “I am really pleased that we have been able to bring Jeffrey to the club.

“I know he will love it at Celtic and I am sure our fans will love him and what he can bring to us.

“He is a fantastic guy, someone with real high-level experience and with great attributes including power, pace and versatility.

“I know that he can be a really important addition to our squad this season.”
