Celtic told there is a player at Aberdeen they should have signed to replace Alexandro Bernabei

Celtic’s transfer policy/business is the one area of the club that has come under real scrutiny this season.

The club spent money last summer on players who Brendan Rodgers clearly doesn’t rate and in January a further £3m was splashed out on Nicolas Kuhn as the Celtic manager tries to find the answer to replacing Jota.

And whilst the jury is still out on the German winger, it is clear that Hyunjun Yang and Marco Tilio still have a lot of work to do to convince Rodgers that they are good enough to play a part for Celtic.

However, it was the left-back position that was glaringly needing to be strengthened and failure to do so has proved costly for Celtic.

Alexandro Bernabei filled in for the injured Greg Taylor over the last few games and whilst he has done okay, it is clear that the Argentine is not good enough to play for the club.

A mistake against Aberdeen cost Celtic dearly at Pittodrie and then again against Kilmarnock on Saturday, Bernabei was found wanting at the back post as Craig Watson nodded home the headed equaliser.

Celtic’s inability to strengthen that position has left Mark Guidi astonished as the journalist pointed out one player at Aberdeen Rodgers should have signed who he thinks is better than Bernabei.

Guidi said [The Go Radio Football Show], “One example is Bernabei. Now I’m not jumping on the back of him because of Saturday. I’ve said this consistently.

“Now they’ve known for at least a year that they need better in the left-back area. Now, in January, I’m not saying you can go out and get better than Greg Taylor, I really like Greg Taylor.

“But you’re not telling me you can’t get better than Bernabei as your backup. You’re solving two problems. You’ll get rid of a guy who’s probably a good earner and who’s nowhere near it.

“You’re not trying to me for example that you couldn’t even go and get young [Jack] MacKenzie from Aberdeen to come and play for you ahead of Bernabei?

“So the fact that they have left the manager with that is shocking. Absolutely shocking that he has been left with a player who is nowhere near the standard of a Celtic jersey.”

Now I’ll admit to not having a lot of knowledge about young McKenzie but at 23-years old, he has already made an impact at Aberdeen.

With 77 appearances under his belt, McKenzie seems to be establishing himself into Neil Warnock’s side with 25 of those coming this season.

Versatile, McKenzie can also slot into the centre-back area and left of midfield but where I have my reservations is that in the 6-0 loss to us at Celtic Park earlier this season, MacKenzie was found seriously wanting abainst Hyunjun Yang. [Fotmob]

Would MacKenzie be a better option than Bernabei at this moment in time? It’s hard to tell but what is clear is that as a Celtic defender, the Argentinian is nowhere near the standard required going from the evidence of his last few games.
