Celtic told what Cameron Carter-Vickers has done in the last month he hasn’t done in four seasons

Celtic’s season has just hit a few worrying patches since the turn of the year.

It depends on how you want to view it; on the one hand, Celtic will still win the Premiership title, but on the other, you can’t let standards slip.

That’s probably why Brendan Rodgers was annoyed after the St Johnstone game, because there are many worrying signs.

One of the issues facing Celtic is the leaky defence and how the backline, no matter who is playing, is struggling to sustain the pressure and secure those clean sheets.

Cameron Carter-Vickers is the main man at the back, and no matter what, he doesn’t get dropped, but a worrying trend might now be occurring in his game.

Cameron Carter-Vickers is losing more duels than ever at Celtic

Since the start of March, Celtic have conceded two goals at St Mirren, lost to Rangers and that defeat to St Johnstone – not forgetting the defeats to Bayern and Hibernian previously, as well as shipping four at Aston Villa and that Ibrox horror show.

Carter-Vickers has started the majority of those matches, and Stephen McGinn feels he is now ‘losing more duels in the last month’ than he has since stepping foot into Celtic Park.

The 27-year-old joined Celtic from Tottenham in 2021, and McGinn thinks he has been ‘the best defender in Scotland’, but he is now having issues, as he told Go Radio.

“There has been a drop off in individual performances, not just the team,” said McGinn. “We spoke about, after 12 games, I think they conceded four goals.

“We were speaking on the show about them setting a new defensive record for the season. They looked really exciting going forward. Right from the very first friendlies. Chelsea and Man City. They looked electric going forward.

“At the back, you thought, ‘how is a team going to score against them’. The goalie looks magnificent. The back four is excellent, but they have just really dropped off.

“Cameron Carter-Vickers has been the best defender in this country for the last four years. I think he has lost more duels in the last month or two than he has in the whole of all four other seasons put together.”

Carter-Vickers’ stats for Celtic against St Johnstone

Carter-Vickers is always going to be the starter, it’s just a case of who is alongside him – Auston Trusty seems to be the favoured option.

But, against St Johnstone, many were surprised to see Maik Nawrocki axed because they feel he didn’t deserve it.

Despite losing and conceding, Carter-Vickers was still handed a pretty strong rating of 7.45.
