A few of Celtic’s Champions League opponents have now suffered gut-wrenching exits from Europe’s elite competition.
The quarter-final games are wrapping up, with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa and the free-scoring Borussia Dortmund bowing out on Tuesday night following defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, respectively.
Just like for Celtic’s Champions League exit to Bayern Munich during the playoff phase, the damage was done in the first leg of those ties, despite the spirited attempts to claw a comeback.
After Villa’s 3-1 first-leg loss in Paris, they returned to the Midlands with a mountain to climb, and were then 2-0 down inside 20 minutes of the second leg, and 5-1 down on aggregate.
But Emery’s side mustered a bit of Celtic magic, because just like Scotland’s most successful club during their trip to Villa Park, they levelled the scores on the night, before going one better by making it 3-2 (5-4 down on aggregate), and provding the French champions with a scare of a lifetime.
Despite PSG’s high-quality attackers on show, they couldn’t match what Adam Idah did against the English Premier League side during the league phase.

Adam Idah is the top away goalscorer at Aston Villa after their Champions League exit to PSG
Villa played a total of eight Champions League games at home, including against the champions of Scotland, Belgium and France.
From Harry Kane to PSG’s blistering forward line, only two teams scored, Celtic and PSG, but Idah was the only attacking player to find the back of the net, as well as being the only one to score a brace.
Both of PSG’s goals came from their fullbacks – Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, as Idah will be wondering where that form from the January has gone.
Idah’s stats for Celtic since his brace at Villa Park
Kyogo Furuhashi had just left Celtic when Idah was handed a start against Villa, and this was his chance to make a name for himself.
All season long, the Republic of Ireland international was trying to find his feet in front of goal, and these two goals were supposed to be a springboard that he belongs as Celtic’s main striker.
But since then, Idah hasn’t got going like he would have liked, and has found himself in and out of Brendan Rodgers’ XI.
