The rise in status of Celtic defender Liam Scales continues apace this weekend after he was nominated for a national award in his native Ireland.

Scales has been a standout at the Bhoys this season, first filling in during a defensive injury crisis and then forming a capable partnership with fellow defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

He’s gone from a potential exit route to Aberdeen, where he was on loan last season, to starting regularly in the UEFA Champions League on merit despite competition from summer Celtic signings such as Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke.

His form has drawn praise from manager Brendan Rodgers and also resulted in a breakthrough into the Republic of Ireland starting eleven.

The PFA in Ireland has now recognised his progress with a nomination for the Men’s Irish Overseas Player Of The Year for 2023, alongside rising striker Evan Ferguson of Brighton & Hove Albion and another English Premier League player in Chiedozie Ogbene of Luton Town.

Ogbene himself has had an exceptional rise, showing excellent form for Rotherham before winning a move to the English top flight.

Ferguson, meanwhile, is considered to be one of the best young players in the Premier League right now and is drawing transfer attention from clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea. Brighton, however, are said to value him at as much as £100m. [The Sun]

That Scales is rubbing shoulders with both players is a testament to how well he has done throughout 2023 and how highly he is thought of across the Irish Sea.

With the potential of contract talks kicking off soon, he’s in a solid position to earn himself a lucrative new deal at Celtic and further solidify his position in the starting eleven.

He’ll know better than anyone he needs to keep performing but as long as he does, there’s every chance he remains a firm fixture for club and country.
