Chris Sutton admits it was ‘good to hear’ Wilfried Nancy’s Celtic admission

Chris Sutton has been an avid defender of Wilfried Nancy and has come out to bat for him once again.

The Frenchman is under pressure already after becoming the first Celtic manager to lose his first two games in charge.

Nancy is still confident of turning things around and has a great chance to win his first game, as well as the first piece of silverware in the Premier Sports Cup final.

Some outsiders believe it could already be curtains for the 48-year-old if Celtic fall to defeat, but Sutton has brushed away those verdicts, despite picking out one area that could’ve been handled better.

Chris Sutton reacts to Wilfried Nancy’s tactics admission

Sutton has been getting increasingly frustrated by the lack of support towards Nancy in the early days of his tenure.

One of the biggest gripes among supporters is the drastic change to a 3-4-3 formation, which has seen players played out of position and struggle to make an impact of any note.

In his press conference ahead of this weekend’s game, the 48-year-old admitted that he may have tinkered too soon, which earned the respect of Sutton.

Writing in his Daily Record column, he said: “A lot has been made about Nancy’s formation and it’s a point I do understand.

“It does look like he’s gone too much, too soon and it’s left a lot of players looking a little confused at times.

“He’s also made in-game changes to the team’s shape and it’s only added to the chaotic scenes at times.

“Sometimes you have to take a step back and look at what you have at your disposal and then find a formation to fit – not the other way around.

Was Wilfried Nancy right to instantly implement his 3-4-3 at Celtic?

“It was good to hear Nancy admitting that he might have rushed things a bit and say he was open to feedback from the squad.

“You might find some of the senior pros saying it’s been too much change too soon and it might be a case of taking a step back to get a few results and then gradually making adjustments.

“Nancy has said he can be pragmatic – but he’ll need to prove it.”

Wilfried Nancy’s struggles highlight Celtic’s wider issues

The criticism of Nancy has been blown out of proportion and is diverting the attention away from the main culprits.

Many felt it would be logical to wait until after the cup final to give Nancy the keys as it may disrupt the balance of things.

That decision, made by the Celtic board, is one of the catalogue of errors they have produced in recent times.

Instead, the blame has landed at the doorstep of a manager who has not long been told where the home dressing room is.

Chants of ‘sack the board’ could still be heard around Parkhead, and it is important that when calling for Nancy’s dismissal, we all stop and think for a minute.
