Celtic’s January transfer window is now underway.

With so much riding on the rest of the season and Wilfried Nancy seriously struggling to get a tune out of his players, it feels like one of the most important in recent memory.

Celtic’s 2-0 defeat to Motherwell was maybe the Hoops’ worst performance of the season. After glimpses of hope in the games prior, it felt a shot of reality.

Their next fixture? The small matter of a Glasgow Derby at Celtic Park, a game that’s quite hard to look forward to at the moment.

Nancy’s January window will be telling as to how much the board are backing him – more details about his transfer plans have emerged.

Wilfried Nancy’s January transfer plans have emerged.

Julian Araujo is seemingly on his way to Celtic in a move which would see him become Nancy’s first signing.

The Mexican international would offer the Hoops a much-needed wing-back profile after weeks of putting square pegs in round holes.

And he might not be the only one helping Nancy’s back five in January, if reports are to be believed.

With Jahmai Simpson-Pusey set to be recalled by Manchester City, there is now even more space to be filled in Celtic’s squad.

And according to the Mail, Celtic will be targeting two centre-backs as well as the arrival of Araujo, which is being delayed by Bournemouth having a maximum number of players on foreign loans.

As a wing-back who can play on both sides, Araujo will offer Nancy some versatility in the area that doesn’t currently exist in his squad.

Yang Hyun-Jun and Sebastian Tounekti have been getting the nod as the wide defenders despite usually being wide forwards.

But with two additional centre-backs in the squad, Kieran Tierney and Colby Donovan would potentially be able to operate as wing-backs more often, instead of being limited to wide centre-back roles.

Wilfried Nancy on Celtic’s transfer plans

Speaking after the team’s 4-2 win over Livingston, Nancy discussed the attributes he prioritises when signing players.

The Hoops boss said: “For me personality is key. We have a lot of ability in terms of the way we play.

“But it is important when you sign players that they need to have that personality.

“This is a big club. To play here is not always easy. So it is so important to have players who can play here at a club like this.

“When I talk about personalities, it’s not only about being vocal either. It’s about having the right attitude when things are difficult.

“This means when we attack, can we keep showing ourselves for each other, can we still press or can we defend like crazy in the moment?

“It’s more about the attitude for me. This is what I am looking for.”
