Celtic’s defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night was a tough result for the fans to take.

Brendan Rodgers oversaw a bruising Celtic loss against Dortmund after watching the Hoops ship seven goals to the Bundesliga club.

There was a lot of optimism heading into matchday two after the win over Slovan Bratislava at Celtic Park, but Rodgers’ side was brought back down to earth after the class and quality of Dortmund proved too much to handle.

Celtic have been on the receiving end of some stinging criticism since the loss in the Westenfallonstadion but Chris Sutton stepped in to defend his old club after listening to Robbie Savage’s verdict on the Glasgow giants in Europe.

Chris Sutton targets Man United’s spending power to defend Celtic in Europe

Everyone knows the amount of money Celtic earns is a relative drop in the ocean compared to what clubs in the top five leagues in Europe can generate.

And Sutton told Savage to judge Celtic after the eight games have been concluded and to ‘just imagine’ what Celtic could do in Europe if the Glasgow giants had the spending power of Man United who are struggling in the Europa League.

On BBC 606, Savage said, “So, Celtic in Europe, Christopher, what, what goes around? Listen they have lost heavily to Basel, they have lost heavily to Dortmund, they do lose heavily to the top teams in European football, but you can’t get a pitch seven.

“TNS went to Fiorentina and only lost two.”

Not having Savage’s Sutton replied, “All you’re doing is, it’s an easy attack, isn’t it, on Scottish football. Why don’t you attack Manchester United, Rob?

“Six hundred million. Just imagine, just imagine if Celtic and Rangers could spend six hundred million on players in three years and put in insipid performances. I’m just saying Scottish teams don’t have the spending power.

“So you’re using one game. I noticed you didn’t say anything about Celtic when they won the first game.”

“It was five, so you got the score wrong against Slovan Bratislava, who earned the right to get into the Champions League.

“Why didn’t you judge Celtic and Rangers after eight games?”

What Celtic spent to prepare for Champions League adventure

Currently Scotland’s richest club, Celtic’s recent set of financial figures reported the club have over £72m in the bank.

That money was put to good use by Brendan Rodgers as he broke Celtic’s transfer record twice this summer to land his top targets.

So how much did the Celtic boss actually spend?

PlayerCost
Arne Engels£11m
Adam Idah£8.5m rising to £9.5m
Auston Trusty £6m
Paulo Bernardo£3.5m
Luke McCowan £1m
Viljami Sinisalo£1m

Contrast and compare that to a Borussia Dortmund team that had £64m invested in it this summer with almost half of that spent on Maximilian Beier, the gulf in finances between Scotland’s champions and a team that finished 5th in the Bundesliga is stark.

However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that Celtic should, and probably could have, performed better on the night and that is something Brendan Rodgers will be looking at for the away trip to Atalanta later this month.
