That was perhaps one of the most remarkable evenings in the history of Celtic Football Club.

When it rains, it pours, and it feels like that was the case on Monday evening, as Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic boss.

But it didn’t stop there, and he didn’t leave through the doors with flowers and chocolate in his hands, but verbal pelters and looks of disgust.

Celtic fans don’t hear much from majority shareholder Dermot Desmond, but he reacted to Rodgers’ departure, and he didn’t hold back, as Chris Sutton tried to take it all in.

What has Dermot Desmond said about Brendan Rodgers?

A brief look into what Desmond said. He stated it was ‘untrue’ that Rodgers wasn’t offered a contract extension.

Additionally, Celtic fans have witnessed Rodgers publicly berate the recruitment, and Desmond added in the statement that all of this was ‘entirely out of the blue.’

Desmond also felt Rodgers’ words and actions have been ‘divisive, misleading, and self-serving,’ and it has created a ‘toxic atmosphere.’

So, what does Sutton make of it all?

Sutton has publicly defended Rodgers, as well as slate Celtic’s recruitment, and he thinks it will be ‘really interesting’ if the departed boss responds.

The legendary striker thinks it’s ‘really damaging’ what Desmond has said, and the end goal of a new manager coming in was ‘inevitable.’

You can read Sutton’s quotes from Sky Sports below.

“Reading the Dermot Desmond statement,” said Sutton. “I will be reading it again later on. It’s quite a lengthy statement, but it is very critical of Brendan.

“In many ways, when there is a relationship breakdown, which there clearly has been between Brendan and the club hierarchy. It’s inevitable that something would have to give, and Brendan has ended up walking away.

On Desmond blaming Rodgers for creating a toxic atmosphere: “It will be really interesting to see if Brendan responds to Dermot Desmond’s statement,” added Sutton.

“Let’s get it right, it’s pretty damaging some of the stuff which Dermot Desmond has said about Brendan.

“Brendan has got his right of reply. But it hasn’t ended well. Everyone suspected that things weren’t right.

“Let’s also get it right, the board are not blameless in this whole situation because Celtic were in a really strong position. When you go back to the earlier part of this year. Celtic played Bayern Munich. Nearly knocked Bayern Munich out of the Champions League.

“The club was on a bit of a high, competing in the Champions League. Everyone expected the club, albeit losing quality players, to go quite strong in the summer, in terms of player recruitment. That didn’t happen. The manager, Brendan Rodgers, was unhappy about that, and the start to the season has been really woeful.”
