Chris Sutton says ‘heavily linked’ Celtic transfer target will have a ‘great career’

The international break is upon us and it has probably come at the right time for Celtic.

The simple reason for that is it allows the dust to settle from Celtic’s defeat to Rangers in the Glasgow derby over the weekend.

That game, and the type of performance Brendan Rodgers’ side produced, was a talking point, especially the lack of control in the middle of the park.

Callum McGregor was absent through injury and his missing presence in the middle of the park was there to see.

Arne Engels played the number six role and dropped deeper from his usual number eight opposition, as Luke McCowan also came into the XI.

But it did raise debates as to whether Celtic have that needed quality in the middle of the park and does one of the answers lie in the form of Scotland’s latest star.

Chris Sutton says Celtic transfer target Lennon Miller will have a ‘great career’

Chris Sutton has praised Scotland coach, Steve Clarke, for dipping into the domestic pond and handing maiden call-ups to a few teenagers.

Hearts’ rising star James Wilson has earned his first call-up, as well as Motherwell midfielder, Lennon Miller.

Sutton noted how Miller is ‘heavily linked’ with Celtic following the ‘quite exciting’ decision to bring him into the senior set-up.

The former striker told BBC Radio 5 Live that he is confident that Miller will go on to have a ‘great career’.

“There are a couple of really interesting picks – Lennon Miller, a player who has actually been heavily linked with Celtic, the Motherwell midfielder,” said Sutton. “Giving him his first call-up. I think that’s quite exciting.

“I think Lennon Miller has been on the radar for a while. I used to play against his dad, who was a decent player, but Lennon Miller has impressed for a while now.

“I think it has been good, in terms of his upbringing in the game and getting games under his belt at Motherwell. There is always a time when sometimes players, who are that young, move too early.

“Whether it is down south or to Celtic and Rangers, then they are benched and what have you. I don’t know how many games he has played, but he has got good experience for someone so young. I think he will go on to have a great career.”

It’s looking more and more likely that Miller will head for the exit door, it’s just a case of where because there is interest around Europe.

Look what Celtic did with McCowan when he arrived from Dundee. These types of deals work and the powers that be should push for it.

For a Motherwell side that has also changed manager this season, Miller has held his own in the middle of the park and earned himself a rating of over seven by WhoScored.
