Wilfried Nancy now needs to spring forward after securing his first win as a Celtic manager.
After Celtic were beaten by Dundee United in midweek, there was a lot of noise around Nancy and his future at the club, with suggestions that he could be fired.
But on Sunday, Celtic beat 10-man Aberdeen to ease the pressure on the newly-appointed boss, but he isn’t out of the woods yet.
Even though Chris Sutton is always of the opinion that managers should be given chances, he is talking differently about Nancy for one reason and one reason only.
What do you think of these stats from Celtic’s win over Aberdeen? Let us know in the comments.
Chris Sutton on the lack of understanding in England about Celtic amid Wilfried Nancy pressure
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport, Sutton stated that people in England ‘don’t understand’ the intensity of Glasgow.
There were some, outside of Celtic, surprised by Nancy’s job being on the line after just four matches, but Sutton admitted that if he lost to Aberdeen, then there would have been big problems.
“If you want my serious opinion,” said Sutton. “I always like to see managers given an opportunity. I really do mean that.
“Down south, I think people don’t quite understand quite how intense Glasgow is as a football city.
“So, for him to lose the first four games, and had he not won against Aberdeen. I don’t know if you heard at Tannadice the other night, they were singing not nice songs about Wilfried Nancy and where they wanted him to go. It’s horrible.
“Had he lost against Aberdeen, and the whole stadium turned against him. I think it would have been difficult to find a way back from that.”
It doesn’t appear that the Celtic players don’t want to play for Wilfried Nancy. This is a nice wee moment.
Sutton’s frustration with Celtic amid Nancy noise
Nancy has been taking a lot of flak. From the trainers he has been wearing, his tactics board, to the new formation he is deploying.
But let’s be honest, Celtic are creating a ton of clear-cut chances, yet time and time again, it’s resulting in the ball doing everything but hitting the back of the net.
Sutton shared that frustration following Celtic’s 3-1 win over Aberdeen, where Kieran Tierney and James Forrest netted late, late goals to make sure of the points.
“They had so many chances,” added Sutton. “ I can’t tell you. I think they hit the woodwork four times in the second half. In the first half, they should have been miles ahead.
“In my stomach, I think all managers need a chance. Four, five or six games isn’t enough. But the climate is the climate in Scotland.”
