Craig Levein tells Celtic the Scottish manager they should’ve hired instead of Wilfried Nancy

Celtic are in a position of uncertainty regarding their manager, just a fortnight after hiring one.

Rumours are already swirling around from credible sources that Wilfried Nancy is in talks to end his Celtic spell, though many outlets insist that no change is imminent.

That’s after a 2-1 defeat to Dundee United marked four defeats in four games in charge for the Frenchman, leaving fans calling for his sacking already.

Nancy took the place of Martin O’Neill, who had won seven of his eight games in interim charge of the team.

And for former Scotland manager Craig Levein, one manager, whom he knows well, would’ve been a better choice for the job.

How many more games are you going to give Wilfried Nancy?

Craig Levein says Celtic should’ve hired SPFL boss instead of Wilfried Nancy

Nancy was seemingly Celtic’s first choice for the job right away, despite links with more established European coaches.

But was the best option available much closer to home?

For Levein, speaking to the STV Radio Football Show, Falkirk manager John McGlynn would’ve been the pick, given his style of play.

He said: “Then you’ve got John McGlynn, whose style of football, I believe…

“He went to work at Celtic, in Brendan’s early days. For suggesting this, I think you would get people just laughing at you.

“But see when the Celtic job came up? I would’ve given it to John McGlynn.”

Host Ewen Cameron then said: “I feared Martin O’Neill staying until the end of the season. That was my biggest fear.

“And if Martin O’Neill had been in charge when Celtic turned up at Tynecastle, I’m not so sure that we would’ve won the game.

“Probably got a draw, maybe… probably the best result that we could’ve got, because of the way the way that O’Neill gets in the players’ heads and the way he plays his football.”

McGlynn took Falkirk up from Scottish League One with an unbeaten season, before winning the Scottish Championship to complete back-to-back promotions.

He has earned plaudits for an attractive brand of football, and worked as a scout and analyst during Brendan Rodgers’ first spell.

What would your message be to Wilfried Nancy?

Other alternative Celtic options

Nicky Hayen had been a preferable option for many Celtic fans, but he is now reportedly in talks to take over at Genk.

Kjetil Knutsen looks close to staying at Bodo/Glimt, despite him being among the bookies’ favourites at one point.

Kieran McKenna has hit form at Ipswich, and could well be a Premier League manager by the time Celtic are next in the market for a permanent boss.

Ange Postecoglou, Robbie Keane and Craig Bellamy were the others in the frame.
