Kasper Schmeichel has endured a fairly tough season, it’s fair to say.
The goalkeeper started his Celtic career excellently in 2024, but after a shoulder injury sustained in March last year, many Hoops fans feel that he was no longer the same player.
This has especially been evident in recent months, when Schmeichel’s form has come under the microscope more than ever. In Celtic’s 4-1 defeat to Stuttgart, some in the Parkhead crowd could be heard booing him.
This talk has, inevitably, filtered into Denmark, where he remains the first-choice international goalkeeper.

Danish pundit Jannik Liburd slates Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel
On Schmeichel, Danish player and pundit Jannik Liburd said, via the Daily Record: “I can already see the headlines, but yes – l think it’s time for Kasper Schmeichel to be dropped from the Danish team.
“It’s a very vulnerable position to change. And Kasper Schmeichel has been a legend and a driving force on this national team for many years and has been at a level that can be described as world class.

“But it’s time to change, and it may have been for a while.
“Mads Hermansen is playing now and has become the first choice goalkeeper at West Ham. And unfortunately, what we see from Kasper Schmeichel is not good enough anymore.
“I have enormous respect for him, but when I look at the goals Celtic are conceding this season, I’m not comfortable as a national team supporter.”
Schmeichel is Denmark’s fifth all-time appearance holder, ranking nine short of his iconic father and 27 short of the country’s most capped player, Christian Eriksen.
A crucial month is ahead for the Danes, after they blew the chance to qualify directly for the World Cup by slipping up at home to Belarus, then being put to the sword by Scotland on *that* famous night at Hampden.
Hermansen would be his most direct competitor, having made an £18 million move to West Ham in the summer. £20 million Chelsea signing Filip Jorgensen is also an option for Brian Riemer.
Union Berlin stopper Frederik Ronnow retired from international football in 2024 after just ten caps, unable to displace Schmeichel from his spot in goal.
Manager Riemer knows Schmeichel well, having signed him as Anderlecht manager a year before he moved to Glasgow.

A tough season for Kasper Schmeichel
The Hoops keeper has been on the end of criticism for a number of months now.
Schmeichel’s performance against Braga was the first major moment which saw him questioned by fans.
In last Sunday’s late win over Kilmarnock, Schmeichel didn’t cover himself for either of the hosts’ goals, leading to calls for him to be dropped on Thursday.
The resulting performance was exactly what he didn’t need, and now the microscope is on him more than ever.
