Celtic did their transfer business very late in the window, but they weren’t the only ones.

Sebastian Tounekti joined from Hammarby late on in the window while the Hoops were also able to secure the addition of Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year deal for free after Sevilla cancelled his contract.

It represented a very disappointing summer for Brendan Rodgers, who had made it clear that the squad needed to be refreshed.

Other Scottish Premiership sides have also been wheeling and dealing in the free agent market since the window shut on 1 September, and have brought one player from Celtic’s invincible days back to Scotland.

Stuart Armstrong returns to Scotland to join Aberdeen

Stuart Armstrong was a popular figure during his three years at Celtic Park.

The midfielder made 144 appearances during his time at the club, winning four league titles, two Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups.

His most impressive accolade was featuring in the unbeaten Treble-winning side from the 2016/17 season.

Armstrong left Sheffield Wednesday in the summer due to their ongoing problems but has now decided to return north of the border to join Aberdeen on a two-year contract.

Dons boss Jimmy Thelin told the Aberdeen club website that they had “been tracking Stuart for some time” while the 33-year-old believes it is “a good footballing decision for me to come here” and the idea of playing in Europe appeals to him.

When will Stuart Armstrong face Celtic?

It’s been a long time since Armstrong stepped out onto the hallowed turf at Parkhead, but one thing is for sure is that he is bound to get a brilliant reception.

Fans will have to wait to see the Scotland international for a few more months, with the return fixture pencilled in for 20 December 2025 at Celtic Park.

The two then meet again on 4 February 2026 at Pittodrie in a midweek clash.

They could also come up against each other in the post-league split, or the Scottish Cup.
