How Odsonne Edouard helped Celtic get Jeffrey Schlupp deal over the line

Jeffrey Schlupp knew the minute he heard of Celtic’s deadline day interest that Parkhead was the place for him.

The versatile Ghana international made the move to Glasgow on the final day of the window and made his debut just two days later in the mauling of Dundee.

It was a whirlwind move for the Crystal Palace loanee after interest had also emerged in the summer before no deal was done at that time.

Brendan Rodgers knew he would not get Kieran Tierney in the door in January so had to divert his attention elsewhere for a left-back challenger to rival Greg Taylor.

Jeffrey Schlupp sought advice on his Celtic move

For Schlupp he was always going to the Scottish Premiership champions so long as there was interest to do a deal.

“In the summer there was some talk about it as well and the club did their bit in the background but nothing ended up happening,” Schlupp told the media before Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup this weekend.

“But I’m happy to be here now.

“As soon as it got mentioned on deadline day it was an easy sell, I just wanted to get it done as quickly as possible and we managed to do that pretty smoothly.”

Schlupp played alongside Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel for Leicester City and the player explained how he did indeed sound out the Dane for advice on the move.

But it was another old teammate in the form of Odsonne Edouard who played super agent for the Hoops in making sure the 32-year-old made the switch to Glasgow when it became available.

What Kasper Schmeichel and Edouard said about Celtic

“Yeah Kasper (gave a glowing review).

“I spoke to a few of the lads who have been here before, I spoke to Kasper who said how much he loved it here and how much I would.

“With the coach and the winning mentality it would be something that would be great to be part of.

“I spoke to Odsonne Edouard plenty of times, obviously he came down to Palace from here and he said how much he loved it and how much I’d love it.

“It’s a great city and obviously it was an easy sell for me.”
