‘I’m a Celtic fan as well’… pundit backs Parkhead support’s board criticism

Celtic supporters have made their unhappiness clear.

A disappointing transfer window which saw Brendan Rodgers lose the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah without replacements pushed many fans’ patience too far.

An open letter sent to the Parkhead board detailed seven key questions for the club’s hierarchy, and received backing from throughout the support.

Celtic responded with a controversial statement released on a Saturday night – and its lack of accountability angered many fans further, as it was labelled ‘soulless’ and ‘heartless’.

After an in-stadium protest at last weekend’s 2-1 win over Kilmarnock, it seems that fan unrest is here to stay – and one former midfielder sees the fans’ perspective.

Former midfielder says he totally gets where Celtic fans are coming from

One of many criticisms being levelled at the club’s higher management is that they have failed to back Rodgers, making a departure at the end of the season feel inevitable.

However, Rodgers himself has said that he is open to staying at Celtic – but only under the right conditions.

For Dylan McGeouch, speaking on Clyde Superscoreboard, fans can ‘jump’ on the fact that Rodgers has publicly had his demands not met.

McGeouch said: “I’m a Celtic fan as well, and I want to see the best players at the club and competing in the Champions League and going to these games

“I’m just like every other fan, really. I totally get where they’re coming from – the other side I can see is; do they have enough to go through the qualifiers? You would say on paper that they probably should have over the two games.

“They didn’t perform, so would the board go and spend fortunes when it looks like Rangers aren’t really going to push them as much as they should?

“I can see both sides. The only thing that the fans can jump on is that Brendan Rodgers has come out openly and said that he needs reinforcement in certain areas and the board haven’t done that until the qualifier, so I can see that’s a problem.

“The manager’s coming out and asking for help, and it’s a week or two late. But for me, they did have enough to go through that tie. If they did go out and splash the cash and spend £15-20 million on top players, they’re left in a Premier League where they’re everyone’s favourites.”

Will Brendan Rodgers stay at Celtic?

Rodgers’ revelation that he is open to staying is a glimmer of hope for the club’s support – but many still don’t see it as realistic.

After all, the Hoops boss has opposition from within the club, condemning the ‘cowardly action’ of the Celtic insider who leaked a negative story on him to the media.

He maintains that he enjoys a positive relationship with CEO Michael Nicholson, and this could also be a decisive factor.

One thing that is clear is Rodgers’ desire for fundamental change at the club – something that many of the unhappy fans share.
