Jamie O’Hara baffled by what he’s hearing about Steven Gerrard-Rangers, as he fires Celtic warning

Rangers could be turning to a familiar face to try to dethrone Celtic.

Celtic have won 13 out of the last 14 titles, and it has continued to leave Rangers in disarray, as they have tried everything possible to stop the champions of Scotland.

But after Rangers sacked Russell Martin over the weekend, the rumour mill suggests that Steven Gerrard could be returning to Ibrox.

Despite some Rangers fans getting giddy over Gerrard possibly returning, Jamie O’Hara just isn’t having any of the nonsense he is hearing.

Jamie O’Hara on ‘dominant’ Celtic amid Steven Gerrard’s expected return to Rangers

Speaking on Sky Sports, while O’Hara thinks Gerrard could lift Rangers out of their relegation battle, he doesn’t think he can achieve what supporters are dreaming of: stopping Celtic.

The former Tottenham player pointed towards Celtic being ‘so dominant’, including how they are ‘way off’ a Brendan Rodgers side that hasn’t started the season well.

Even with Celtic’s on and off the field troubles, they are still nine points ahead of Rangers, after also playing the opening Glasgow derby of the 2025/26 season at Ibrox.

“He went up there, won the league and did a really good job,” said O’Hara. “I think he was there for three and a half seasons.

“He can rescue them? But to what point? And where is he going to get to? Celtic have been so dominant up there, and they have been for a number of years. He went in there and changed that. Won the league.

“But does he go back there? How much of a task it’s going to be? How far have they fallen? They are in disarray, at the moment, Rangers as a football club. They have got new owners going in there. They got it all wrong with Russell Martin.

“For him to go back, it’s got to be the right sort of set-up for him to be successful. They need better players. They have to pay more money for wages. Are they going to be able to get themselves into the Champions League to earn more money to compete?

“I don’t know if it’s the right move for him. I am not sure I am convinced that Rangers are in a good spot, at the moment.

“I just think Rangers are way off where Celtic are right now, in terms of squad and what they can do as a football team. I think it’s a big risk for Gerrard to go in there. Okay, he did it before, but it’s a big ask to do it again.”

O’Hara doesn’t think Gerrard can win the league with Rangers

There were 12 trophies up for grabs during Gerrard’s first reign at Rangers, and he only managed to put one on the table.

If the former Liverpool player does return to familiar ground, then O’Hara feels it’s going to be the same old story, and that’s Gerrard not being able to win the title.

“I do think there will be an upturn,” said O’Hara if Gerrard returns to Rangers. “Do I think they will win the league? No.”
