Kasper Schmeichel has played in some of Europe’s top leagues before he made his big move to Celtic.

With appearances in the English Premier League with Man City and Leicester City to Ligue 1 with Nice and the Belgian Pro League with Anderlecht, Schmeichel has sampled different cultures of football a career that has spanned over 20 years.

The three-time Danish Player of the Year has also won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Community Shield but Schmeichel has admitted that none of what he has experienced at past clubs is even close to what he’s experienced at Celtic.

Having won the League Cup with Celtic, Schmeichel says that the expectation to win every game at the Parkhead club is ‘unique’ to him.

Kasper Schmeichel says playing for Celtic has ‘elevated’ his game

Schmeichel told Stick To Football, “The opportunity of going to Celtic was a unique one for me, because you’ve played for clubs where it’s expected to win.

“I’ve never really played for those clubs where it’s expected. So going to Celtic now that pressure that if you don’t win, if you just draw, it’s a catastrophe.

“But also, I think it’s elevated my game because now it’s not just about winning, it’s about being perfect.

“Now we don’t have to just win, we have to do it perfectly. So every action I do now, every bit of handling, every pass, everything has to be perfect. Now, it’s not just about winning.”

Kasper Schmeichel talks about how the Champions League gave him ‘tough’ moments at Celtic

Celtic got plenty of plaudits for their performances and results in the Champions League this season, but for Schmeichel, he found the experience ‘tough’, and Celtic fans will know exactly why.

“Now, there are different things that motivate me,” continued Schmeichel, “Now, it is about winning and winning well, and how much can we win.

“And the Champions League this season was an incredible experience. We competed, but for my mentality, I wanted to win. And that was that was tough. That was a tough moment.

“But I think you go through tough periods in your career, and you go through great periods in your career. And while you’re still physically able, then why not continue?”

Schmeichel’s winning mentality fits in well with the Celtic first-team as that is what this club and players are built on and used to.

With a possible treble on the horizon, Schmeichel has the chance to enter the Parkhead history books before he even considers retiring from Celtic.

After extending his Celtic contract for another year, it seems there is still a long way to go before Schmeichel hangs up his big gloves, and that is something the Hoops fans will be delighted about.
