Kris Boyd hits out at Philippe Clement for ‘celebrating’ against Celtic after Rangers sacking

As Celtic march towards another Premiership title, those across the road are looking for a new manager.

In truth, it is surprising it has taken Rangers this long to sack Philippe Clement because Celtic have been all over their rivals ever since he was appointed manager in 2023.

Clement tried to stop the Celtic tide when he first came in, but in the end, he was met with another wall of dominance from Brendan Rodgers and more is coming during these next few months.

Celtic fans certainly enjoyed the laugh because those at Ibrox never stood a chance and it was always enjoyable to see them fall flat on their face.

On Saturday, despite losing to Hibernian, the champions still managed to increase their dominance at the top of the table – via goal difference – because Rangers were beaten by St Mirren.

That ended Clement’s reign, with only one trophy to his name, as he will now watch from home as Celtic push for the Treble.

Kris Boyd slams sacked Rangers manager Philippe Clement for ‘celebrating’ draw against Celtic

Clement only beat Rodgers once – and that was the last meeting – as many felt that result and performance was a lucky hit for the Gers.

But there is something else that seemed to have grinded Kris Boyd’s teeth and that was Clement’s actions against Celtic last season.

The former striker slammed Clement for ‘celebrating’ a 3-3 draw against Celtic in the Premiership at Ibrox and how that was the start of the end for the Belgian boss, as he told Sky Sports News (24/02/25 at 09:25 am).

“I don’t think there is any surprise (that Clement has been sacked) and if there is any, then it’s why it has taken so long to happen,” said Boyd.

“It was one of the worst performances (against St Mirren) since he arrived. In terms of the progression and where the club was going, it’s no real surprise. The performances, for me, anyway, have been getting worse throughout time.

On when it started to go wrong for Clement: “I think last year when you look back to, March-April time, Rangers lost at home to Motherwell.

“Then, just after that, the 3-3 with Celtic. If you look back now, there were signs there. Celebrating, more or less, drawing with Celtic in a must-win game. I don’t think it’s something you do as a Rangers manager.”

Clement’s laughable comments post-Rangers and Celtic’s draw last April

Clement’s reaction post that draw against Celtic proved and showcased, not just the gulf between the clubs, in terms of quality, but the mentality as well.

Amazingly enough, Clement told Sky Sports at the time that it was a ‘moral’ victory for his team.

“I’m happy about the reaction, they showed personality and at the end, we are the moral winners of this fight, of this game… with a lot of passion, everything these supporters want, everything this club wants,” claimed Clement.

“Everything this club is about, they showed in the second half.”

You have just got to laugh from a Celtic perspective and now look forward to more entertainment in the coming months.

Celtic should win the Treble and add to the 119 trophies – more than anyone else in Scottish football history – they have won.
