Liam Scales has been given a well-earned slap on the back this afternoon after Celtic’s latest announcement.
The Republic of Ireland international has had a superb season under Brendan Rodgers after being drafted in from the cold to cover a defensive injury crisis at the start of the season.
The 24-year-old looked like he was on his way out of Celtic last summer after having a successful season out on loan at Aberdeen.
With Barry Robson looking to make his move permanent, Celtic had also recruited heavily by bringing in Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke after losing Carl Starfelt to Celtic Vigo.
That meant Scales dropped to fifth in the pecking order behind Cameron Carter-Vickers, the two new recruits and Stephen Welsh.
However, injuries to Carter-Vickers, Welsh and Nawrocki meant that his move to Aberdeen was scuppered as Scales was called upon by Rodgers to slot into a makeshift back four.
And hasn’t he done well? Now a mainstay in the Celtic staring lineup, Scales’ performances has meant that Celtic’s £7m duo of Lagerbielke and Nawrocki have been resigned to the bench.
Now in line for a new contract, Scales has also now been recognised for his outstanding season after Celtic’s latest announcement.
