As Celtic prepare to face Kilmarnock at Parkhead today, the fans will be hoping to see more of the performance that saw Brendan Rodgers take the team into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.
The Celtic supporters were delighted to see a marked improvement in the quality of the performance and to see Kyogo Furuhashi get back on the goals trail.
And that’s why Mark Wilson believes that Brendan Rodgers may have stumbled on a brilliant new partnership at Celtic.
Wilson said [Superscoreboard], “I thought he would have put Kyogo and Idah in. Kyogo can certainly play there and just goes to show you can score goals from that position.
“It doesn’t mean that when he drops deeper, he isn’t going to get opportunities, you know, it just means rejigging his game and timing his runs.
“But he’s an intelligent player. It does look good.”
Idah and Kyogo could be a force for Celtic this season
Over the years, Celtic have had a striking duo up front that ran amok in the Scottish Premiership.
Obviously, Sutton and Larsson have been one of the best the fans have ever seen in the modern era and whilst I am in no way comparing that partnership with Kyogo and Idah, the point is that having two strikers with different qualities upfront does have its advantages.
The lone striker role that Kyogo plays simply doesn’t work under Rodgers’ system. Under Ange, Kyogo thrived within that fast-paced, all-out attacking system that was so popular with the Celtic fans.
However, the slow and patient build-up play of this Rodgers team negates Kyogo’s qualities and having Idah there to occupy defenders and create more space for the Japanese striker seems to be the way forward.
We saw that come into effect against St Mirren last Sunday and I fully expect that to continue today against Kilmarnock.
