Martin O’Neill shares update on Celtic’s next manager, hours after AGM was cancelled

It’s never a dull day at Celtic, and that was proven once more on Friday.

As the cloud still hovers above Celtic’s head as to who will be the club’s new manager, there was the small matter of the AGM in the lead-up to Saturday’s Premiership clash at St Mirren.

To perhaps nobody’s surprise, and given the broken relationship between Celtic fans and the board, the AGM was cancelled by Peter Lawwell before anyone could ask, ‘Why are you guys such incompetent fools?’

Martin O’Neill was present, as is his duty as the current manager, and it’s a shame he had to witness such a divide.

But what about some news on the new boss, which wasn’t addressed because the AGM didn’t get to that point.

Celtic statement on AGM postponement

Such conduct is completely unacceptable and hugely disappointing, and while today’s events are completely outwith our control, clearly we regret the impact on our shareholders who were deprived of the opportunity to take part in an orderly and constructive meeting.

Martin O’Neill’s update on Celtic’s next manager after AGM cancellation

Wilfried Nancy’s name continues to do the rounds, but so far, there is nothing concrete that he will be in the dugout anytime soon.

Even Columbus Crew themselves have stated no contact has been made for Nancy by Celtic, but perhaps that’s just them not wanting to reveal anything, unless it does go wrong.

Either way, not long after the farce of Celtic’s AGM, O’Neill, the only one who can hold his head up high, updated fans on the next manager.

“I think things are progressing pretty nicely, in terms of the new manager coming in,” said O’Neill. “My departure is certainly welcomed by me, if nothing else. I think, at some stage or another, something will happen in the very, very near future.

On if O’Neill will be in charge post-St Mirren match: “For me, well, we are getting to know each other a wee bit,” joked O’Neill with Sky Sports presenter Gordon Duncan.

“But I only judge it game by game. Like everybody else, we don’t win against St Mirren and don’t play well in the game. Maybe it’s time for the new manager to step in and progress it as quickly as possible.

“But, for myself now, it’s the only thought after the AGM this morning. The thoughts are to tomorrow and St Mirren, which will be very difficult for us.”

O’Neill on the role of Celtic’s new manager amid AMG chaos

If Nancy is the new manager, he doesn’t just have to get Celtic going on the pitch, but he needs to bring everyone together off it.

The fact is, the feeling from the paying fans won’t change, and the stubborn board won’t budge from their positions.

So, as O’Neill rightfully pointed out, the new man in the dugout has to bring everyone together, whether they like it or not.

Poll: Do you want Wilfried Nancy to become the new Celtic manager?

“The new manager, I think that will be part of his role, to unite the football club again,” added O’Neill.

“Obviously, it’s very, very important because Celtic disunited, if there is ever such a word. Can’t really compete. It’s really as simple as that.”
