Michael Stewart names £1m man who would make his strongest Celtic XI despite just six starts

Celtic have a strong squad right now and with the transfer window open, it’s only set to get even stronger.

Brendan Rodgers has built a team good enough to win the Scottish Premiership and, hopefully, make the Champions League knockout rounds this year.

The manager has rotated plenty this term, too, with four changes against Dundee United and then a handful in the next fixture against Motherwell.

There are no passengers within Rodgers‘ outfit and each player has their own strong suits and talents that can be utilised by the manager whenever necessary.

Midfield in particular is a stacked position within the Celtic ranks with captain Callum McGregor leading the pack which includes record signing Arne Engels, Paulo Bernardo, Reo Hatate and Odin Holm who will leave for LAFC on loan this month.

But it is another man who has come in this season and shown how good he can be and pundit Michael Stewart reckons he should be starting every week for the Parkhead club.

The former Hearts and Hibs midfielder reckons Luke McCowan would be in his side every time when asked to pick what he feels is the strongest Celtic XI.

Stewart believes McCowan has it all and has demonstrated as such since he joined from Dundee in a deal worth around £1million to the Dens Park club.

It was a nominal fee by comparison to the £11m spent on Engels.

And the £3.5m Celts dished out to land Bernardo on a permanent basis following his loan.

Yet Stewart is adamant McCowan deserves more minutes on the pitch as he has shown what he’s all about.

“The middle of the park is the interesting one for me because I’ve harped on about it enough,” he said on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club show.

“I’m picking my team, the strongest, I’d be having Luke McCowan in it. I really like him.

“He’s got a bit of everything.

“You’re wanting to play a number eight he is great energy, picks up good positions, sees a pass and has an eye for a goal.

“I would like to think he would get a bit more of a run of games but there’s maybe something else Brendan sees in training that perhaps angles him towards something else.

“But certainly for Luke McCowan I’d be hopeful he’d get a wee bit more game time.”
