Not many pundits speak up for Celtic fans as they protest against the board, but Mick McCarthy has done so by calling for an ‘overhaul’, given the circus of this campaign.
The Celtic hero listed the issues that have unfolded in Glasgow this season, from the nightmare reign of Wilfried Nancy to the constant defeats.
That’s why McCarthy thinks Martin O’Neill is currently facing an ‘impossible task’, as he tries to wrestle Celtic’s season around.
“They have lost as many games this season as they did in the previous two seasons combined,” stated McCarthy. “It feels like the club needs an overhaul. How are they going to do that? They have tried to do it with Wilfried Nancy, but Martin did brilliantly when he went back in. Then it’s an impossible task.”
Before Celtic could travel to Stuttgart for the second leg of their Europa League playoff encounter on Thursday, McCarthy explained the issues at the club.

Mick McCarthy calls for Celtic ‘overhaul’ amid ‘impossible job’ for Martin O’Neill
Celtic fans have been protesting all season long, including against Stuttgart last week, which annoyed O’Neill, and proved that he just doesn’t understand the real issues at Parkhead.
But at least McCarthy understands, as he highlighted the previous boss, and how Nancy just didn’t get Celtic, as he proved with several of his comments.
Nancy only lasted 33 days, but one of the words he used during his time in Glasgow is ‘process’, or speaking about the ‘performance’ after a defeat.
McCarthy explained on The Managers Podcast that ‘nothing matters’ other than winning in Glasgow, and it’s proof that Nancy just didn’t get it.
Either way, following Celtic’s recent defeats, McCarthy has shared that the Hoops have now lost ‘as many games this season as they did in the previous two seasons combined’, which probably sums it all up.
“Celtic, that’s close to my heart,” said McCarthy. “Having lost Brendan, he has gone, and they get Martin O’Neill in, and he does brilliantly.
“Then they employ Wilfried Nancy from the States. Nobody knows. He can’t have any idea of what Celtic and Rangers, and the Scottish Premiership, can be about. I saw when he came in, and he lost a few games. He said, ‘It’s about the process, not about the result.’
“Bells were ringing in my head, thinking, ‘No, it’s the result up there.’ Nothing matters, how you play or what you do. You have to beat Rangers, you have to win the title, so to hear him say that.
“What did he lose six out of eight games or something? Martin O’Neill has come back in. He must keep his slippers up in the hotel.

“How are they going to do that? They have tried to do it with Wilfried Nancy, but Martin did brilliantly when he went back in. Then it’s an impossible task. They have been bashed in the last two games. Bashed in Europe, and they have lost to Hibs at the weekend.”
