The start of a new football season always brings a new excited feeling to not only Celtic fans but football fans in general.
For us though, a new manager coupled with a new recruitment drive and seeing what kind of playing style we will adopt has brought a heightened sense of interest to the new season.
Now, as we all know, Celtic fans also like to keep an eye on other connections to the club. Whether it be how our loan players are doing or how players who have been sold fare at their new clubs.
But here is a different take for the season ahead. Celtic have eight ex-players currently sitting in the managerial hot seat in the UK at the start of this new season.
Eight former players who have represented the club at some level and even won huge amounts of domestic honours during their time at the club. So here they are.
Starting in Scotland:
Barry Robson – Aberdeen
Malky McKay – Ross County
Paul Hartley – Cove Rangers

Barry Robson won a league title and a league with Celtic during his time at the club. Malky McKay was part of the legendary Hoops squad that stopped Rangers’ bid for ten in a row. And Paul Hartley won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and a league cup under Gordon Strachan.
Not a bad start.
For those former Celts plying their trade in England, we have:
David Moyes – West Ham United
Tony Mowbray – Sunderland
Gary Caldwell – Exeter City
Scott Brown – Fleetwood Town
Shaun Maloney – Wigan Athletic
Moyes had a three-year spell at Celtic in the 80’s. He only made 24 appearances for the club but did manage to bag himself a league winners medal in 1982.
Tony Mowbray spent four years at Celtic in the barren 90’s era. Unfortunately, the English defender didn’t manage to win any silverware at the club during his time.
Gary Caldwell was also part of the Gordon Strachan era with Paul Hartley. He won the same amount of medals as the Cove Rangers manager and helped the club progress into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Shaun Maloney had two spells at Celtic in which he won five league titles and three league cups. He was also part of the legendary team that got us to Seville in 2003.
And there is no need to even describe the career of the legend that is Scott Brown. Every Celtic fan knows his accomplishments. The former Hoops captain is an icon at the club and led Celtic through one of the most successful periods in their history which included the Quadruple Treble and the second nine-in-a-row.
So if you find yourself at a loose end and Celtic aren’t playing, keep a wee eye out on these former players and watch how their managerial careers progress as the season kicks on.
