Neil Lennon names Celtic’s ‘inconsistent’ star and what he needs to do to fix it

Celtic have been firing on all cylinders this season.

The big players at Celtic Park have all come to the fore with several names who could realistically be named player of the year when the awards roll around at the end of the campaign.

A 16-point lead has been opened at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and the club’s participation in the Champions League raked in big prize money while also showing progress on the pitch from Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Neil Lennon has been impressed by Celtic this term and has often praised individual players for their efforts including Arne Engels, Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda to name a few.

But the Irishman feels there’s one star who has been a “little bit” inconsistent and how that has impacted his playing time in Glasgow this year with a telling, ominous moment coming after Celtic’s Aberdeen win.

Neil Lennon calls Celtic star Adam Idah ‘a little inconsistent’

Adam Idah has had to bide his time with Kyogo previously while red-hot Maeda is now keeping him out of the starting XI at times, with Jota the option in the wide areas.

And Lennon, speaking on Sky Sports before Celtic’s 5-2 win over St Mirren, reckons Idah has to find some consistency in order to start every week.

“When Kyogo left and Adam came into the team, he got two against Villa. He was banging them in, but he’s inconsistent a little bit,” Lenny said.

“Brendan brought him, McCowan and Greg Taylor back into the team last week against Hibs, but he was poor. And obviously, you could see Brendan wasn’t happy and he whipped the three of them off.

“Went back to his tried and trusted starting eleven. He’s got good attributes I think, but he’s too inconsistent at the minute.

“You’ve got to get into his head. I think sometimes he switches off. There was a great opportunity in the first-half last week, when he came across, and all he had to do was slip in one of the runners.

“He took the extra touch. It’s just his thinking has to be quicker and brighter. I think he’s an instinctive kind of player where he’s powerful, he’s quick, he’s strong. And he does things off the cuff. I think he needs to think more.”

Idah took his time this season to find his shooting boots after joining for a then-record Celtic transfer fee.

He got his moment against Young Boys even if it wasn’t a direct goal himself and that brought confidence to hit his brace away at Aston Villa.

From there, the 24-year-old scored another three goals in four matches but he has tailed off again in recent weeks.

The big man is a proven goal scorer and it seems like confidence is a major factor in Idah’s psyche. But we reckon it is only a matter of time before he turns in another strong performance which will hopefully lead to more.
