Peter Grant delivers his honest thoughts on Celtic loaning Stephen Welsh to Motherwell

Celtic sanctioned a few loan departures during the summer transfer window.

Maik Nawrocki moved to German side Hannover 96 for the rest of the season, and they have the option to sign the centre-back in 2026.

Adam Montgomery was sent out on yet another loan, this time to newly-promoted Scottish Premiership outfit Livingston.

While Luis Palma and Stephen Welsh will now play for Lech Poznan and Motherwell respectively until the end of the campaign.

Welsh moved on deadline day to Fir Park with the chance of gaining regular first-team football. So what does Celtic legend Peter Grant think of the move?

Grant backs Motherwell’s capture of Celtic defender Welsh

Grant was speaking on The Go Radio Football Show and believes Motherwell have secured a fantastic defender.

The 60 year-old thinks Welsh should have been loaned out a few years ago, even during Ange Postecoglou’s reign when he was getting more minutes.

But Grant is a big advocate of Welsh moving to Fir Park. He said: “100 percent. I thought he should have done it maybe a couple of years ago, even though he was in and out the Celtic team. I thought he’d done enough to earn that move at that particular time.

“Maybe he was looking abroad. Unfortunately, he’s got a shoulder issue a few times, important times for him. But I think he’s a very good signing for Motherwell.

“I think he’ll do very well. He’s quick, he’s strong, he can play in different positions. Very good in the air for not being the biggest.

“You know, he attacks the ball very well in opposition’s box, so he’s a threat at set pieces. All these wee things come in here. For all the nice football we talk about, you’ve still got to be a defender.

“I think he’s a very good signing for Motherwell.”

Welsh was on verge of Plymouth Argyle switch

Weeks before deadline day, Welsh was targeted by EFL League One outfit Plymouth Argyle, making a loan with option to buy offer.

Celtic considered the loan but took too long to come to an agreement with Argyle, so the English side pulled the plug and focused on other targets.

It was a blow at the time for Welsh, and he was then forced to wait right until the final hours of September 1 to secure a move.

Now the centre-back can kick on and show his talents at Motherwell, who are playing some excellent football at the moment under Jens Berthel Askou.
