As a glimmer of sunlight finally threatened to break through the dark clouds hovering over Celtic Park, the club’s board somehow managed to drag the gloom right back.
That’s even with Martin O’Neill’s return to Celtic being confirmed.
All of this stems from rumours that Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham have been offered ‘wage cuts’ by Celtic, despite playing a major role in the domestic double win last term.
But Peter Martin hit the nail on the head on PLZ Soccer when he reminded everyone that the Celtic board have ‘£80m in the bank’, yet they cannot afford to offer such key figures what they are worth.
“But I am not sure why the club goes down that route, if indeed they are offering them a wage cut, because they have £80 million in the bank,” said Martin.

Celtic’s profits highlighted amid claims Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham offered ‘wage cuts’
Celtic fans’ protest against the board won’t stop, but you wonder how it will play out next season with O’Neill in the dugout for the entire campaign.
The simple reason is that they simply won’t change their ways, and fans won’t rest until they are out of the door.
You see it with these rumours around Maloney and Fotheringham. These are two guys who played an underrated role in Celtic lifting trophies last season.
They helped paper over the crack created by the board, yet this is how they treat such individuals, and you just know that they won’t change.
But as Peter Martin also added, the champions of Scotland are ‘about to announce figures that will rock most of Britain as far as profit.’
“I am not sure why that information, obviously from Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham’s point of view, they might just say, ‘Well, we will just fire this out here to let everyone know what the club is doing,'” said Martin.
“But I am not sure why the club goes down that route, if indeed they are offering them a wage cut, because they have £80 million in the bank.
“They are about to announce figures that will rock most of Britain as far as profit. I can’t understand where this club is going.
“And they have to obviously try to back Martin (O’Neill) in the transfer window to completely transform that squad. I don’t get why they would allow themselves a negative piece of news coming out when you consider that people are already scunnered with them.
“Do you start to demotivate somebody before they are back in the door?”
