Pundit says Celtic could revisit move for ‘outstanding’ January target this summer

Celtic struggled to enact a whole host of winter transfer business at Parkhead, with just two new arrivals coming in to bolster Brendan Rodgers’ squad.

Republic of Ireland international Adam Idah and £3 million signing Nicolas Kuhn came through the door to strengthen our forward line; however, the Bhoys’ failure to bring in a left-back also made headlines during the window.

On deadline, unsuccessful attempts were made to try and land Paris Saint-Germain full-back Lavyin Kurzawa and Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Hugo Bueno.

Estoril’s Tiago Araujo and Dundee loanee Owen Beck were also believed to be on Rodgers’ radar; however, nothing came to fruition, leaving Greg Taylor and Alexandro Bernabei to fight it out on the left-hand side of our backline.

Lo and behold, Bernabei has since left Celtic to join Brazilian giants Internacional on loan for the remainder of 2024.

As it stands, Taylor is now the only senior left-back on the books, with Anthony Ralston, Liam Scales, and Mitchel Frame among the options in reserve should the Scotland international suffer an injury or suspension.

Pundit says Celtic could revisit a move for Owen Beck in summer

Frustratingly, Celtic were ruled out of a move for Beck despite showing interest in a permanent deal in January amid Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s decision to field the Welshman during the Reds’ 4-0 victory over Bournemouth earlier this year.

Of course, given the 21-year-old had spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Dundee, regulations determined that Beck couldn’t represent three clubs in the same season.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, former Scotland international Kenny Miller believes Celtic could revisit a potential swoop for Beck this summer once the window opens again for business.

He stated: “I think it’s a position there’s no doubt Celtic will be looking at; by all accounts, Owen Beck was a big target in January, and it maybe couldn’t happen because Klopp put him on for seven minutes of a game.

“He went on for seven minutes and it couldn’t happen. I think it would be a really really good bit of business if they revisited that, in terms of profile, I think both sides of the Old Firm are going to be looking at left-backs.”

He later added: “It’s been really tough on Greg Taylor as he’s been another one of their top performers over the last two seasons, but Owen Beck for me is an outstanding young player.

“I think he would fit the model where you bring him in, you put him into a Celtic team, you develop him, he plays in European football, and he could be one in a few years that finds his way back down south.”

Celtic should continue to monitor Owen Beck’s progress

Celtic will need a left-back this summer due to Bernabei’s career at Parkhead being more or less over, so it is worth casting the net for potential reinforcements over the coming months.

Sky Sports News journalist Anthony Joseph claimed last month that there is still ‘a chance’ the Bhoys could try to land Beck in the next window; however, it is unclear whether Liverpool would sanction an exit for the Wrexham-born defender.

Per Sofascore, Beck has illustrated his quality at both ends of the field in the Scottish Premiership, making 2.8 tackles on average per match alongside creating six big chances this season.

Looking forward, it may be worth keeping an eye on his situation as he continues to pull up trees on loan at Dundee.
