Raging Peter Martin raises Brendan Rodgers sack prediction after Celtic defeat

Brendan Rodgers isn’t in his first rodeo at Celtic.

He has been here before. The side’s form is being questioned after a dismal defeat to Dundee left them five points adrift of Hearts at the top of the Premiership table.

Fans have aimed frustrations at the Celtic board, but eyes are also starting to turn to the manager after his comments about being given the keys to a ‘Honda Civic.’

Given the Hoops’ financial advantage over their opponents at Dens Park, some weren’t best pleased with Rodgers’ words.

And with the Hoops boss in the final years of his contract, Peter Martin has slated his conduct – and offered one prediction about him being sacked.

Peter Martin on Brendan Rodgers

Rodgers’ comments were clearly in reference to a transfer window in which the Hoops side clearly became weaker.

But with the likes of Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate, he still has more than enough to be beating Dundee.

Rodgers’ contract situation adds further weight to his words – we know that Rodgers chooses his comments carefully, and they can contain loaded messages.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer, Martin didn’t hold back on the Celtic boss.

He said: “Spin it any way you want, that’s Brendan having a go in typical Brendan fashion, about the fact that they didn’t give him the keys to the Ferrari to be able to go and play the football that he wants.

“So you know exactly where he’s going with that. There comes the classic Match of the Day interview, just to let everyone in the English Premier League know: ‘I’m here, I’m available, I haven’t gone away. I’m not going to be at Celtic next season. I’m ready for you.’

“Honestly, you could write a book on the amount of times that has happened. Down there, English press, lovely. Because they don’t like the Scottish press, we’ll give you that. You’ll do it strategically, and by the time you get to May, he’ll be off.

“My gut feeling is that if this turgid football continues, the Celtic fans will go ‘wait a minute, you’re to blame.’ And the board will sack him. And if they sacked him, I think it would suit him.”

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic future

Rodgers has said that he is open to staying at Celtic under the right conditions. What those conditions are exactly is a mystery, but they clearly won’t be easy to negotiate.

Rodgers will be a manager in demand should he decide to leave. He has already been linked with several Premier League roles this season.

But would the Parkhead hierarchy sack him? Things should, of course, be better, but the Parkhead boss has made it clear that he enjoys a good personal relationship with Dermot Desmond.

Ultimately, a scenario where he doesn’t see out his three years as he promised seems unlikely, but not impossible. It would be good to see results quash those conversations this week.
