Rangers pundit warns Russell Martin about his Ibrox future, amid Brendan Rodgers and Celtic fear

There has been more change across the road from Celtic.

After Celtic won the double during the recently concluded season, Rangers appointed Russell Martin as their new coach.

Whether it’s the comical Ibrox spell of Pedro Caixinha or Barry Ferguson coming in as an interim, it has always been the same result.

That’s Celtic winning trophy after trophy, and Rodgers has played a huge part in that during his two spells in the Celtic Park dugout.

During that period, the Irishman seemingly has put the fear into the eyes of the opponent, and that seems to be echoed even before Martin can take charge of his first game.

Brendan Rodgers against Rangers managers

Gordon Dalziel questioned Rangers’ call to bring in Martin because of who he is going to be up against, as he wanted Davide Ancelotti appointed instead.

The former Rangers man highlighted the number of coaches Rodgers has seen off at Celtic, including the likes of Michael Beale.

There is a fear of coming up against Rodgers, because of how much he has won, that’s 11 trophies and counting, as Dalziel added that if a job was up for grabs, then only one man would be appointed between Martin and Rodgers, as he told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard.

“Ancelotti, for me, was the right one,” claimed Dalziel about Martin getting the Rangers job. “But if you are going to take a different avenue, bring in players to make them better.

“I keep going back to the guy across the city, Brendan Rodgers. Matt O’Riley. He’s improved most of these Celtic players. You need a very, very top coach. Nothing against Russell Martin. This guy has worked at the highest level; it’s about thinking outside of the box.

“Basically, what Rangers have done is put a manager up. Russell Martin against a manager, Brendan Rodgers. It’s the same. Clement against Brendan Rodgers. Beale against Rodgers.

“Right, so how many times has Brendan Rodgers seen these guys away? So, for me, I would have been thinking outside of the box.

“If Russell Martin and Brendan Rodgers go for an interview tomorrow for a job. Who is getting the job?”

Russell Martin won’t remain Rangers manager if Celtic triumph again

For the last two seasons, Celtic missed out on the Treble. This isn’t a case of whether the champions will win next season, it’s a case of how many?

Given the negative noise around Martin’s appointment from Rangers supporters, Dalziel fears that there is only going to be one outcome next season.

Dalziel made it clear that Martin will be out of the door if Celtic are picking up the trophies again and Rangers are walking away with nothing.

“If I were him (Martin), I would have gone down a different route,” added Dalziel. “I would have come out more confident. I would have said, ‘Yes, we have to win trophies, and we are going to win them this year’.

“I look at Ange Postecoglou. I admire that. Best statement ever. I am not saying come out and say, ‘we are going to win the Treble’, that isn’t going to happen.

“Let’s be honest, going by the calls (from fans) and the reaction, if he doesn’t win silverware, then he isn’t going to be sitting here next year.”
