The Brendan Rodgers story has been absolutely box office today. With further talks due to be held in London with Dermot Desmond, Rodgers does look like he will be the next Celtic manager.
As well as mending the relationship between himself and the Celtic support, The Daily Mail have also said that there was one thing that the club had to agree to that was ‘key’ in Rodgers agreeing to take over from Ange Postecoglou.
The report says, “Rodgers has also held a number of in-depth conversations with major shareholder Dermot Desmond to thrash out his conditions for a second stint in Glasgow.
“Key to the 50-year-old agreeing to a return is an undertaking by Celtic’s board of directors that they will invest in the players and infrastructure necessary to drive the club forward in Europe.”
And it seems that they have. Reports have suggested that as well as being the highest-paid manager in Celtic’s history, the club will have a significant transfer fund available to help bolster the squad for the upcoming Champions League campaign.
You would also have to imagine that one of the areas Rodgers would like full control of is the recruitment of players.
The Irishman’s famous ‘we’ve got about a million wingers’ comment when Maryan Shved signed for us back in 2019 set alarm bells ringing at the time as it seemed to suggest that there was a disconnect between Rodgers and the recruitment team.
I mentioned this week that if Rodgers were to become the manager, his record in the transfer market would need to improve.
We have seen how giving the manager full autonomy over transfer dealings can help bring success. Look at what we witnessed under Ange Postecoglou as an example of that.
But whatever happens from now until an announcement is made, the Celtic fans will be refreshing their Twitter feeds for any other updates on the managerial search and as it seems like it is when, not if, an announcement is likely to be made.
