Ross McCormack says one thing Celtic’s Kasper Schmeichel does is the best he’s ever seen

Kapser Schmeichel is another example as to how well Celtic’s recruitment has faired over the years.

When Joe Hart retired, it would have been easy for the powers that be to hand the goalkeeping reigns to someone much younger and help build them up.

Celtic did sign youngster Viljami Sinisalo, but they also brought in the experience of Schmeichel to replace the departed Englishman.

At the age of 38, it’s clear that the Denmark number one is now towards the end of his career, with the shot-stopper recently spending one season in the colours of Anderlecht.

But Celtic felt he was the right man to replace Hart, even if it’s going to be short-term, and fast forward to the present and it’s proving to be a great move.

Given that Kasper has a legendary father, who played the game and won it all, then it’s probably not easy replicating his footsteps, but he has had an outstanding career to date.

Ross McCormack played with Schmeichel jr when he was at Leeds United in the early to mid-2010s and he had nothing but high praise for the player.

Apart from that nightmare game in Dortmund, everything else is going swimmingly well for Brendan Rodgers and the man in between the sticks.

The advantage here was that Rodgers worked with Schmeichel at Leicester City, including winning the FA Cup, so not only does he know his game inside out, but also his character.

McCormack is another man who played alongside him and he labelled the Celtic man as ‘different class’ and how he has taken the team to another level, because of Schmeichel’s ability to play out from the back, including how he’s never seen someone strike the ball like he does, as he told Open Goal.

“Different class,” said McCormack. “He is the only goalkeeper I have ever seen, see when the defender passes it back to him and they are hitting it first time. He (the defender) has got to take a bit off it because he would just hit (the full length of the pitch). His kicking (is class).

“I think where he has taken Celtic on again this season is, last year with Joe Hart, he was a wee bit (uncomfortable) with the ball at his feet. Kasper can play. He can play.”

There is every chance Celtic win every domestic trophy this season, and if that happens, what an introduction it will be for Schmeichel.

Celtic face Rangers in the League Cup final next month and that provides the Dane the chance to lift his first piece of silverware in the famous green and white colours.

Schmeichel has been rated 7.15 by WhoScored for his Premiership performances and just under seven in Europe, with an average of just over 30 passes per game.
