Si Ferry shares ‘fear’ around Celtic appointing Wilfried Nancy, it’s shut down by Andy Halliday

Celtic fans have been learning a lot about Wilfried Nancy in recent weeks.

That’s because the Columbus Crew boss could become Celtic’s next manager, as he is one of the favourites to replace Brendan Rodgers.

Of course, things could change pretty quickly, but as of Thursday and the November international break, it’s Nancy’s name that is doing the rounds and the one that’s standing firm.

If Celtic push for the Frenchman, it would be a left-field appointment, as the Open Goal panel discussed Nancy possibly coming in, and Si Ferry isn’t so sure.

The ‘fear’ around Celtic appointing Wilfried Nancy

Ferry was joined by Andy Halliday and Scott Allan, as the former Celtic youth player expressed his ‘fear’ at the formation that Nancy plays.

Nancy likes the three at the back, and if he were to come in, it would be something very different and not something the Celtic Park faithful have been used to.

But Ferry told Open Goal that he isn’t sure it will work, because he doesn’t know who has been successful with that formation in recent times.

Former midfielder Allan did drop Antonio Conte’s name on the table, as Halliday made it clear that, as long as you have ‘attacking wing-backs’, it’s a formation he really likes.

Ferry: “Just on Celtic. The American guy, well, he’s French, but he is coaching in America. I have seen that he has been heavily linked. Columbus Crew, is it? Wilfried Nancy.

“Do you think it will be a left-field appointment?

Andy Halliday: “That’s what Ange Postecoglou was. Nobody knew who he was. Again, I wouldn’t say his CV was unbelievable coming to Celtic. Turned out to be an unbelievable appointment.”

Ferry: “Do you know what gives me the fear about this boy? Do you know what formation he plays? 3-4-3.”

Halliday: “I have told you before. I don’t mind a 3-4-3. As long as you have attacking wing-backs. I quite like a 3-4-3.”

Scott Allan: “Isn’t that what Conte was doing?”

Ferry: “Everyone goes, ‘Conte did it.’ It was ten years ago, and who has been successful at it since? I don’t like 3-4-3.
