Simon Jordan states what conversations Brendan Rodgers would have had with Celtic about his contract

It’s going to be a huge talking point until something is confirmed, and that’s Brendan Rodgers’ contract.

The Celtic manager’s current deal expires during the summer of 2026, and from last season, there has been a lot of talk around whether he will extend his stay in Glasgow.

Rodgers returned to Celtic during the summer of 2023, in perhaps a surprise comeback because when he left for Leicester City in 2019, he didn’t exactly leave on good terms, and he was verbally battered by the supporters.

All of that is forgotten about now because Celtic are still winning trophies for fun, and many are wondering what the long-term picture is going to look like for the champions of Scotland.

What conversations Brendan Rodgers would have had with Celtic

Simon Jordan would have hired and fired many managers during his time at Crystal Palace, and he shared his penny’s worth on the Rodgers situation.

The former Crystal Palace owner mentioned the last time the Irishman left, and how that would have been spoken about with the powers that be at Celtic Park, and how it can’t happen again, as he told talkSPORT.

Jim White stated: “Brendan left before, Simon. He went elsewhere, and the elsewhere was Leicester. You can dominate in Scotland, and he has been doing that. There might come a time when Brendan again wants to.”

Jordan then interrupted: “Use Celtic as a stepping stone.” White added: “Well, your words. Not mine.”

Jordan then asks: “Then why would you leave Celtic to go to Leicester?”

White doesn’t answer the question, but asks: “Might he consider another opportunity should it come along. That he would think, that’s a challenge. I have enjoyed my time again at Celtic.”

Jordan then stated: “I am assuming they must have covered all of this off when he came back. I am assuming that conversation would have been had.

“Ultimately, we are bringing you back. There will be a bit of a backlash from certain sections of the fanbase, who think you left in the middle of a season because it suited you best. Went to a Premier League club, and we don’t want too much of that again. Thank you very much. So, I am assuming that has been covered off.”

The possible ‘issue’ behind why Rodgers hasn’t signed a new Celtic contract

All of this is interesting because, during parts of last season, Rodgers was also talking about Greg Taylor’s contract situation, and now the spotlight is on him.

For Jordan, it’s pretty simple, he thinks that the only issue could be ‘money’, and it’s ‘not that difficult’ of a situation to resolve, because you either ‘want to sign’ or ‘you don’t sign.’

“If it were a footballer, we would say that a year is a very short amount of time,” added Jordan. “‘Oh, he has one year left on his contract.’ If it’s a manager, then he has a long period of time.

“Quite frankly, a manager could be more valuable, because he is going to be responsible for managing all your major assets. Buying your players, and making sure that the thing goes forward rather than one individual player.

“I don’t know what the particular issue could be. I am assuming it could be money. It’s not that difficult, is it? You have a contract. You are in place. You know one another. You have worked with one another before. If you want to sign. You sign. If you don’t want to sign. Then you don’t sign.”
