Celtic fans have had to put up with all sorts of nonsense about Steven Gerrard possibly returning to Rangers this season.
After Brendan Rodgers saw off another Rangers boss, Russell Martin’s sacking left the door open for Gerrard to take up the Ibrox hotseat once again.
Ever since the news broke that Rangers were speaking to Gerrard, Celtic supporters have had to endure pundits and the Ibrox support rewrite the history of his first tenure at Ibrox.
One trophy in nine as Celtic picked up treble after treble was the reality of Gerrard’s Rangers tenure and Peter Martin has superbly mocked the hype surrounding his return to take on Brendan Rodgers’ Bhoys.

Watch Peter Martin ridicule Gerrard to Rangers hype with mocking Celtic tone
Peter Martin was reacting to the news that Gerrard had rejected Rangers when made the point that Celtic were simply not ‘scared’ if he did come back to Glasgow.
Martin told PLZ Soccer [49m], “The only thing I would say to you on this is that everything is based on the premise that whatever Rangers do, it’s all geared towards success.
“You know, Steven Gerrard’s coming back. That’s it. It’s going to be absolutely magnificent.
“You know, not once, did anybody say, ‘Wait a minute. He’s coming back’, but do you think all these other dumplings are going to sit and do nothing?
“Do you think Celtic are going to sit and go, ‘Oh, Steven Gerrard, we’re scared.’
“Do you know what I mean? Hearts have got their act together and you’re looking, you’re saying, ‘Well, could a Hibs, could a United, could an Aberdeen suddenly get their act together?’
“The boy Dave Cornmack has thrown a bit of money at Aberdeen and they are bang average. Are they going to get better?
“Can Hibs turn draws into wins? Can Derek McInnes keep it going?”
You can watch Martin’s superb mocking below:
Celtic’s trophy record when Steven Gerrard was Rangers manager
Gerrard was in charge at Rangers from June 2018 until November 2021. In that time the Liverpudlian won one trophy after making 42 signings, spending £35m along the way.
In that time, St Johnstone won two trophies spending less than 10% of what Gerrard spent but what Celtic did was just remarkable:
- 2 x Scottish Premiership titles
- 2 x Scottish Cups
- 2 x League Cups
Gerrard watched Celtic lift a record-breaking Quadruple Treble and seal a second nine-in-a-row in his tenure as the Ibrox boss.
So was Gerrard’s time at Rangers a success? It certainly was for Celtic and St Johnstone.
