‘That’s what Bayern Munich were’ – Chris Sutton tells Vincent Kompany exactly what he thinks after Celtic draw

The platitudes Celtic received for their performance against Bayern Munich continue.

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic put up a great show against Bayern as they almost created Champions League history in the Allianz Arena last night.

Despite earning a creditable draw, Celtic are still out of the competition with the 2-1 defeat at Parkhead being the Scottish champion’s undoing.

But as the fallout of the elimination from the Champions League continues, Chris Sutton has delivered a message to Bayern manager, Vincent Kompany on what he really thought of their progress in Europe’s top competition.

Chris Sutton says Celtic’s performance vs Bayern Munich was best in ’25 years’

Sutton told Sky Sports, “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, and that’s what Bayern Munich were this evening.

“I’ve got to say, in terms of Celtic away performances in the Champions League over the last, however, 25 years that that was up there with one of the best against the mighty Bayern Munich.

“They had real control in the game. They defended brilliantly, and to a man, the back four stayed intact.

“McGregor was excellent in the in the centre of the park. They just maybe faded as we expected they would in the second half.”

Vincent Kompany told Bayer Munich were ‘jammy’ vs Celtic

Whilst Sutton praised Celtic, the former Hoops striker laid it out bare for Kompany as the former Hoops striker pointed out just how lucky the German club where to get past his old club.

“But that is a real sickener, the nature of the goal,” continued Sutton, “The save from Schmeichel and Davies getting a little bit lucky. And Vincent Kompany, blimey, how jammy can he get? How jammy can Bayern Munich get?

“But Brendan Rodgers, how will he view this?

“And the Celtic players, they know they had opportunities earlier on in the game that they really should have taken.

“This is a real signal from Celtic this evening but they can be real proud of that performance.”

Whilst Celtic fans will remain proud of their team’s efforts, there will always be that nagging doubt of ‘what if’.

What if Callum McGregor had just squared his chance to Daizen Maeda? What if the ball had dropped perfectly for Nicolas Kuhn? What if Daizen Maeda had just latched onto that cross from Arne Engels?

It would have been such a different story that was being told today.
