Celtic captain Callum McGregor was tipped to join Brendan Rodgers in Saudi Arabia after the Northern Irishman sealed a deal to join the moneybags league.

Rodgers moved to Al Qadsiah just seven weeks after his unceremonious Celtic exit which saw Dermot Desmond issue a public flaying of the former Hoops boss.

As per usual, whenever a manager moves on from Celtic, the usual transfer rumours start and that is where the McGregor whispers started just before Christmas.

However, as Kris Boyd tried to stir the pot, Celtic hero Chris Sutton superbly shut down the former Rangers man with a brilliant reaction to the Sky Sports man’s question about McGregor taking up the offer to leave the Hoops.

Chris Sutton shuts down Callum McGregor Celtic exit to Saudi speculation

Sutton is liked by Celtic fans for his brutally honest verdicts about how his old club is run or whenever he sees poor performances.

But when asked by Boyd if he could see McGregor leaving Celtic, Sutton’s reply was right on-point.

Boyd asked on The Warm Up, “Talk about maybe Maeda performing again because the transfer window coming up, but there’s a few links with Callum McGregor for Saudi and Brendan Rodgers. Do you see that?”

Sutton immediately started laughing and said, “Could I see that? Uh, no.”

Boyd: “You don’t think that could happen?”

Sutton: “I mean, they can offer him a shedload of money. I mean, it’d be interesting if he got enticed, what his decision would be.”

Boyd: “What would you do in this situation?”

Sutton: “What, truthfully?”

Naismith: “Yeah, truthfully, you’re all about honesty on here.”

Sutton: “All right. I’d ask my wife what I should do.”

Celtic cannot afford to allow Callum McGregor to leave just yet

While Callum McGregor is entering the twilight of his Celtic career, the club simply cannot afford to allow the skipper to leave just yet.

For one, there is no viable replacement for McGregor at Celtic right now and it doesn’t look like there is anyone in the Academy who can take up the role.

Paulo Bernardo could possibly do that role but the Portuguese is struggling to get game time under Nancy.

For all the team’s faults, McGregor is still Celtic’s best player and allowing him to leave would be suicidal for the club right now.
