What Ally McCoist said about Celtic and Rangers in December looks foolish after Philippe Clement’s sacking

Rangers sacked Philippe Clement as Celtic continue to dominate Scottish football.

Clement was delivered the news last night after Rangers failed to close the gap to Celtic in their 2-0 loss to St Mirren even after the Bhoys lost at Hibs.

With a 13-point gap and a goal difference of +31 to Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, Celtic have wiped the floor with their Glasgow rivals this season and as Brendan Rodgers sets his sights on another treble.

Celtic already have the League Cup in the bag after beating Rangers but it was what Ally McCoist said after the Hampden final that is now coming back to haunt the former Ibrox boss.

Ally McCoist’s claim about the gap between Celtic & Rangers come back to haunt him

McCoist had a discussion with Jeff Stelling about the gap between Celtic and Rangers after the Hoops won the League Cup final.

Stelling suggested the gap between the two clubs had closed and McCoist couldn’t wait to agree, “Absolutely, Jeff. Clearly you want to win it.

“That goes without saying. But the level of improvement in the last couple of games. The Spurs game and the game yesterday.

“Yes, it’s pretty evident. As disappointed as it will be, I have got to say the upturn in form in the last few games, hopefully, really encouraging.”

The gap between Celtic & Rangers before the League Cup final to now

Before Celtic beat Rangers in the League Cup final, the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership was already very significant.

With 15 games played in the league, Celtic were unbeaten with 43 points out of 45 as Rangers languished in third place behind Aberdeen on 29 points.

With a 14-point gap, the league at that time already looked over but in two months, Celtic’s lead at the top had been reduced by a single point.

Currently, Celtic are 13 points clear of Rangers who are now in second place despite having various chances to close it further.

Since the League Cup final, Celtic dropped points against Dundee United, Rangers, Dundee and Hibs and the Ibrox club failed to capitalise on any of those occasions.

As Celtic fans debate the next Rangers manager, Rodgers will be fully focused on delivering yet another treble to the Parkhead trophy cabinet this season.
