What Chris Sutton was ‘stupidly thinking’ about the AGM before Ross Desmond’s attack on Celtic fans

The Celtic AGM is still dominating the conversation this week despite the impending appointment of Wilfried Nancy as the new manager.

Celtic fans have been fuming about the AGM as they criticise the Parkhead board for their conduct at the annual meeting.

The Green Brigade took aim at Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell as the Ultras group listed the ‘disgraceful’ conduct at the Parkhead meeting.

And now, Chris Sutton has shared what he was ‘stupidly thinking’ after he watched Peter Lawwell’s pre-recorded video where the chairman admitted mistakes were made by the Celtic board.

Chris Sutton says Celtic fans gave Peter Lawwell ‘the option’ to shut down the AGM

The former Celtic striker was summing up his version of what he witnessed when Sutton said the Hoops support allowed Lawwell to shut down the meeting.

Sutton told The Warm-Up, “In fairness to Peter Lawwell, whether the fans appreciated the way in which he did it, he did he did ask the fans to behave.

“And then he would have felt he was in a position where because of the vociferous nature of some of the fans that they shut it down. And in many ways it gave him that option to do that.

Repeat of the behaviour and I will have no hesitation closing the meeting.

“And then they go out for half an hour, come back in and there are a couple of videos which were shown where there was a conciliatory tone from Peter Lawwell and Michael Nicholson.”

Chris Sutton ‘gobsmacked’ at Ross Desmond’s Celtic fan attack

And what made Sutton admit he looked a bit stupid? Ross Desmond’s statement on the Celtic fans.

Sutton continued, “I know some of the shareholders and fans walked out for that particular. So then I’m stupidly thinking, ‘Well that’s okay. Fans are, of course, not going to be happy about certain things but sort of saying, ‘Well, we’ve made mistakes’. I think that was a positive thing.

“At least they’re trying to move in the right direction. And then came Ross Desmond and the statement which he read out.

“And I, like yourselves, would have been pretty gobsmacked by the tone of the statement as much as anything because I thought that at that time it was the time to go softly, softly and hold out an olive branch to the supporters and say what’s gone on has gone on, let’s draw a line under that.”

The reverberations of the astonishing AGM are still being felt three days after the event. And now, as Celtic supporters wait for the publication of the resolution votes, this will not be the last the Hoops support will hear of this.
