Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic exit was simply extraordinary.

A 3-1 defeat to Hearts had left Celtic in a tough place, but there was little inclination that his departure was imminent.

All of a sudden, Rodgers tendered his resignation and a storm was started in Scottish football. Martin O’Neill was announced to be completing a stunning return to be his interim replacement.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Dermot Desmond launched a brutal attack on Rodgers in a statement released less than an hour after his departure.

Rumours have swirled around exactly what happened between Rodgers and Desmond, and Gordon Dalziel has now discussed his acrimonious departure.

Desmond’s statement described Rodgers’ actions as ‘divisive’ and ‘self-serving’.

He also claimed that they had directly contributed to a ‘toxic atmosphere’ around the club and personal attacks against members of the board at Celtic Park.

Rodgers was reportedly going about his business as normal on his final day, before his resignation took everyone at Celtic by surprise.

But more and more rumours around exactly what happened are being raised. Speaking on Open Goal, Dalziel weighed in “We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes. I’ve heard one or two reports of what’s happened.

“Brendan went in on Monday, wanted a meeting, wanted to see if it could be resolved. He goes to Lennoxtown, and all of a sudden gets a phone call that ‘we’ve accepted your resignation.’

“We don’t know John Kennedy as well, 27 years and all of a sudden he leaves as well.

“I think [Desmond] was angry with him, and I think it’s been boiling away. Because Brendan’s been coming out with things, and you can take whatever about the Civic Hondas and Ferraris.

“You can take that as, ‘is that the way we’re playing on the park, or is he having a wee sly dig at the board again.’ So I think it was all bobbling away, and it was going to happen somewhere.

“Because you’ve got two strong characters there, and Brendan will look after himself as a manager. So it was always going to come out.”

What will be Brendan Rodgers’ next step after Celtic?

Rodgers’ next step after the end of his second Celtic spell will be fascinating.

Alan Brazil has heard that Rodgers is destined for Saudi Arabia, and this could be an imminent move. This would certainly be a big change from managing Celtic.

He has also been linked with the Wolves job, with Vitor Pereira under pressure. Crystal Palace and Bournemouth will both also be monitoring their managerial situations, with Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola both out of contract at the end of the season.

As we all know, Rodgers has Spanish under his belt, so it could finally be time for him to try his hand abroad.
