What Jurgen Klinsmann said to Hyeongyu Oh after Korea loss; Celtic striker needed to hear it

The international break is a time that almost every football dreads. The worry about players getting injured and the boredom without club football all culminate into a period of time the fans can’t wait to see the back of.

However, this one is slightly different. It’s close season and we have a multitude of Celtic players that we can keep an eye on over the next two weeks.

Like Hyeongyu Oh, for instance. The Celtic striker is on international duty with South Korea and was handed his first-ever start under national boss, Jurgen Klinsmann.

Unfortunately for Oh, his team went down 1-0 to Peru and the Celtic striker was brutally harsh on himself in the post-match interview.

Oh said [Inter Football], “I made my A-match debut and got my first start. I felt a lot of things from today’s game. There are so many things I need to improve and do in the future. I think it was a game where I was able to strengthen myself.

“As a striker representing Korea, I think I should have scored from those chances. I’m very ashamed of myself for not taking advantage of my chances, and I’m also ashamed of the fans who came to watch.

“There were a lot of things that weren’t right in terms of movement and things like that, and I think I have a lot of work to do.

“The coach told me not to get too upset and to keep going. I wanted to give him his first win, and it’s very hard not to. I don’t know if I will have a chance in the next game, but I will do my best to score against El Salvador.” [translated by Deep L]

Why Hyeongyu Oh needed calming words from his manager

To use a good old Scottish colloquialism, I like the cut of Oh’s jib. The 22-year-old striker is so determined to do well in his self-analysis, he does seem to be overly harsh on himself.

This was only his third cap for South Korea and despite limited minutes for Celtic, he is still doing enough to convince Jurgen Klinsmann that he is worthy of an international call-up.

Oh’s determination to improve and build on his international performances is also brilliant news for Celtic. Because for him to continue his development on the big stage, he must look to push Kyogo Furhashi for that one starting spot next season.

From what I have seen from Oh in his first six months at the club he has got some serious potential to be a very good striker but he does have to listen to Klinsmann and stop being so harsh on himself.
