Celtic’s pre-season is well underway now that the first friendly fixture against Ayr United is under Brendan Rodgers’ belt.

The Celtic manager will be delighted to have welcomed most of his first-team players back for the game against Scott Brown’s Ayr United despite the 1-1 scoreline.

At this stage of the summer, it’s all about getting minutes into the legs and match sharpness back and whilst the team that lined up in Ayrshire was much changed from what the Celtic fans were all used to, it did give us all a glimpse of some of the club’s most highly-rated young talents.

Bosun Lawal, Odin Thaigo Holm, Josh Dede and Kyle Ure all got starts for Celtic but it was young Dane Murray who was receiving the most attention on social media after the game.

Dane Murray makes long-awaited Celtic return

Dane Murray got a second-half run-out against Ayr United on Friday night and it was one that the 21-year-old was really looking forward to.

Introduced to the Celtic first team by Ange Postecoglou in 2021 there was a sense of excited anticipation surrounding the young academy starlet.

However, a horrendous run of injuries put the handbrake on Murray’s career and after going under the knife last summer to treat a knee injury, Murray finally returned to the first-team fold on Friday night and was afforded the honour of the captain’s armband.

And he took to Instagram to show his joy.

It seems that young Murray is a popular person around Paradise as his Celtic teammates from past and present sent him messages of congratulations with Christopher Jullien, Mikey Johnston and Bosun Lawal all leading the charge.

On-loan striker Johnny Kenny and new Watford signing Rocco Vata also got in on the act as they showed their appreciation for the young Celtic defender:

Former teammate, Ewan Otoo replied, “Love that“, Joey Dawson wrote, “A sight we have all missed” and young Celtic B goalkeeper, Tobi Oluwayemi cheekily posted, “Can I frame this?”.

Liam Bonetig, Ben Wylie and Adam Montgomery also all sent messages of support to young Murray.

Given his Celtic first-team debut back in 2021 in the Champions League qualifiers against FC Midtjylland, Murray will be looking to make more of an impact now and show what he is made of after securing a new two-year deal this summer.

Let’s hope he is given more minutes against Queens Park and taken on the 2024 USA tour so that he can continue his first team development this season.
