Celtic qualified for the Champions League playoffs after beating Young Boys 1-0 at Parkhead.

An own goal was enough to give Celtic the three points against the Swiss side as Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers realised his ambition of getting out of the Champions League group stage this season.

And whilst Young Boys were ‘bitter’ about the Celtic Park defeat, former England hero Gary Lineker was blown away by one Hoops hero who was a standout in the win that created a big bit of history for the Parkhead club.

Gary Lineker lauds Kasper Schmeichel’s ‘absolutely fantastic’ saves vs Young Boys

Lineker was reviewing the memorable Champions League night at Celtic Park when he highlighted just how important Kasper Schmeichel was in the victory over the Swiss champions.

Lineker told The Rest Is Football [24m], “Wow, big night for Celtic. It was a game that they knew if they won they were almost certain to qualify for the playoff stage.

“While they left it late, they had loads of chances. Having said that, Kasper Schmeichel pulled off two or three absolutely fantastic saves from the great man. And Celtic got their victory.

“And well, the crowd went mad when they scored, because they had a few misses particularly in the first half.”

What Kasper Schmeichel did in Celtic’s win vs Young Boys that left Gary Lineker breathless

Schmeichel signed a new contract at Celtic and it was announced on the day that the Hoops were taking on Young Boys.

And to prove just how important he is to Celtic, here are the moments during the Hoops’ win that left Lineker absolutely speechless.

Indeed, this is not the first time Schmeichel as done this in UEFA’s elite competition. The great Dane was crucial in Celtic’s draw at Atalanta and he was also extremely important for the Hoops in the Celtic Park win over RB Leipzig.

With two more Champions League fixtures to come, there is no doubt Schmeichel will play a huge part in helping Rodgers get the result he wants.
