Celtic’s reported interest in South Korean winger, Yang Hyun-jun has kicked up a notch over the last few days. Reports circulated last week claiming that the club had made a formal offer for the 20-year-old.

67 Hail Hail also spoke yesterday about his manager at Gangwon being unhappy with the player’s agent for discussing the speculation in the media.

And now, we have the player himself speaking about the move after Gangwon’s bottom-of-the-table 1-1 draw with Suwon FC.

Hyun-jun said [Sports Chosun], “I want to go to Celtic. Playing in Europe is something every player dreams of.

“First of all, I’m a member of Gangwon, so it’s important to do my best to get the team out of the relegation zone. But I also want to make it to Europe.

“I want to go in the summer, not the winter.

“When I was offered an offer from the United States (Minnesota) last year to go to Europe, I stayed according to the club’s wishes. The club promised me then that they would actively help me if an offer came from Europe, and I hope they honour that promise.” [translated by Deep L]

As we all know, the issue for Gangwon is that they don’t want to let one of their best players leave whilst they are hovering within the relegation zone.

Gangwon currently sit second from bottom in the K League with a four-point cushion from Suwon FC who prop up the table.

The K1 League club are currently seven points from their closest rivals and whilst there are still plenty of games left to secure their top-flight status, Gangwon believes that they have a better chance of achieving that if they keep Hyun-jun until the end of the season.

Hyun-jun clearly has made his intentions clear but I can also see his club’s predicament. Hopefully, the situation can be resolved sooner rather than later for both the player’s and Gangwon’s sake.
