Has Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson just solved a potential problem position for Celtic?

Celtic may well have a problem position to fill if the injuries to the first-team keep piling up.

So far (at the last count) Celtic have Jota, Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Callum Osmand, Marcelo Saracchi and Kelechi Iheanacho all on the treatment table.

As it stands right now, the Celtic first-team squad is threadbare, especially in the back four.

With Kieran Tierney as the only recognised left-back with Hayato Inamura as his back-up, if either gets injured, then whoever is the Celtic manager will have a big problem on his hands.

But it appears that Republic of Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson may have helped Celtic solve that potential issue in Ireland’s 2-0 win over Portugal.

Ireland show Celtic another side of Liam Scales

Liam Scales is currently on international duty with the Republic of Ireland right now, and the Celtic defender helped record a historic 2-0 win over Portugal.

Scales’ performance was lauded by the Irish media despite the Celtic star being deployed in a position utterly alien to him at Celtic.

Hallgrímsson decided to play Scales at left wing-back instead of in the heart of the Irish defence, which set up in a 3-5-2 type formation.

The Celtic defender’s stats were amazing as he contributed an assist to send Portugal home from Dublin with a sore defeat.

Scales hadn’t played that position since his Shamrock Rovers days but as a temporary measure, should Celtic receive more injuries, has the Irishman proved that he can be trusted slotting into that position for the Glasgow giants?

What Celtic’s Liam Scales said about new role for Ireland

The Celtic defender was keen to show that he is a reliable option anywhere on the park for Ireland.

Scales said of the positional change, “We’ve been working on me getting free at the back post and getting the ball back across all week of training, and I hadn’t put one back right into the right area.

“They were almost about to take me off that role, but I said I’d do it on the day, and luckily, I did. Troy was brilliant. You know, he’s always in the right place at the right time.”
