The unorthodox position Luke McCowan played vs Kilmarnock that highlights glaring Celtic weakness, must be addressed

Celtic romped to victory against Kilmarnock but will have to wait a little longer to be crowned champions.

Greg Taylor starred in a 5-1 win against their Ayrshire opponents as Celtic scored four goals inside the first 25 minutes.

Brendan Rodgers was after a response following last week’s surprising defeat against St Johnstone and duly got one.

It’s hard to be critical as the Bhoys close in on a 55th Scottish Premiership title, but one moment involving Luke McCowan highlighted how much work there is to be done in the summer.

Luke McCowan played in unusual position during Kilmarnock thrashing

Adam Idah started the game up top after Rodgers made several changes to his lineup, therefore shifting Daizen Maeda out onto the wing.

There was no recognised striker on the bench and when Idah and Maeda were eventually withdrawn, McCowan was tasked with playing an unusual role.

Instead of his typical defensive midfield position, the former Dundee man was told to play further up the pitch in what appeared to be a false nine-style.

It was only a brief run out up top and unlikely to be one that the Celtic manager deploys again but it does indicate the lack of options in that area of the pitch.

Celtic must sign a striker this summer

The departure of Kyogo Furuhashi was always going to happen, but many felt it would be something to sort in the summer.

His move to Rennes left the club with Idah as the only out-and-out striker, although Maeda has been playing down the middle since the turn of the year.

A striker must be on the top of the shopping list this summer and Celtic can’t afford to get this one wrong.

Whether they come in as a backup to Idah or are brought into be the talisman, more bodies are needed.

Long-time target Mathias Kvistgaarden almost joined in January and will be among the options mentioned again.

Rodgers wants a striker this summer and quite simply, the Celtic board have to give him one.
