Two ways Celtic can adapt to Colby Donovan injury update

Martin O’Neill will be forced into a rethink after reports of an injury to Colby Donovan.

Donovan was substituted in Celtic’s win against Dundee and the Scottish Sun have revealed that the teenager will have a scan on a potential injury.

Right-back is a real problem in the injury department with Alistair Johnston and Julian Araujo already out, meaning that O’Neill is down to the bare bones and could be forced into a rethink. With that, here are two options that could be considered.

Anthony Ralston comes back in from the cold

Aside from his return to the side when Donovan came off last weekend, Anthony Ralston has been nowhere to be seen in the Celtic side.

Ralston’s last appearance before that was on 14 March against Motherwell in which he played 12 minutes.

The Celtic academy graduate has come in for criticism for his performances earlier in the campaign and is one of the many expected to move on in the summer.

Frank McAvennie thinks Ralston will stay, even if his contract expires in 2027, and he may finally have a chance to prove if he is worth a new deal.

Celtic could revert to a new formation

If O’Neill thinks that choosing Ralston is the wrong idea, we could see the return of the 3-5-2 formation.

Trialled by Wilfried Nancy in his crazy 33 days, Celtic do have the players to use that formation.

That could allow Kieran Tierney and Marcelo Saracchi to play together while Hyunjun Yang could drop slightly deeper into the wing-back role, where he did flourish under Nancy.

It may mean that the Hoops even try two up top, with some calling for Kelechi Iheanacho and Tomas Cvancara to start together while top scorer Benjamin Nygren could be pushed further up.
